i mean
has anyone ever gotten rid of mosquitos in the tropics?
would that not somehow up set the entire ecosystem?
============================================================
Malaria and yellow fever used to be a serious problem in the American South. Now it is quite rare. Malaria (paludismo) is rare in the DR and Mexico, and this was not always the case. It had to be eradicated in order to complete the Panama Canal.
So the disease CAN be prevented. Getting rid of mosquitoes is more difficult.
Now that we can manipulate mosquito DNA, it seems more likely that we can eradicate the several types of disease bearing mosquitoes forever.
Or simply alter the mosquito DNA so that it cannot transmit these diseases.
The disease is spread by a specific type of mosquito, but not all such mosquitoes carry the disease.
