My fiance and I are both US Citizens. We have planned a trip to the DR from 2/14/03 - 2/21/03. Spur of a moment decision today we decided to try and elope. I have read the archives, I know about the paperwork and I have already started that rolling. Now I need to find an inexpensive place and or person to perform the services (not our hotel) Please advise.

Getting married in the DR is relatively easy. See http://dr1.com/travel/special/weddings.shtml for the necessary paperwork. You also need two witnesses. Depending on where you will be staying, you can find an Oficialia del Estado Civil and a Juez de Paz (in the same place). Cost is minimal if you do it all yourself.

I am staying at a really small hote il Colonial Santo Domingo. I understand what you are saying Dolores... but where can I find these officials to perform the ceremony. We would just like to say our vows on the beach in a private spot, or really anywhere private.

the officials are found anywhere, you may get help locating them with one of the hotel employees for an small tip, and for a little bit more the officials may be willing to go to you hotel and do the ceremony in you own room if you want.

Will I just have to wait until I get there to find this out or is there anyone I can contact prior to going down there? Just want to have all my bases covered. The consulate here in Maryland has already instructed me on the affadavits and translations... not I just need to find and officiant and a location... and maybe a photographer.

trust me on this, once you are there everything is going to be very easy to set up, you do not need to worry in pre-plans unless you are going for 2 days or less.

Thank you so much. I have also emailed the hotel owner he is graciously trying to help me. It is just for something this small (5 people) I see no need to pay $650 and up to get married.
