From today's Sosua-News:

"Journalists of the weekly magazine 'El Faro' recently interviewed the commander of the tourist police for the province of Puerto Plata (including Sos?a and Cabarete), General Antonio C?ceres Chestaro. They asked him about the reasons of the recently held raids, in which especially women and street vendors were arrested, by the Politur. The commander said that the Politur had the intention to increase the security for tourism. With these 'cleaning' actions we want to make Sos?a and Cabarete more attractive for the tourists. They want to protect the tourists who walk through Sos?a and Cabarete, against nuisance. But they also want to win back the confidence of investors. Politur works closely together with the Tourism Ministry, the Health and Environmental Department and the military.

"They are convinced that both these tourist towns will become more attractive to investors and tourists again."

Good to hear. Getting rid of nuisance, winning the confidence of investors. Politur has been consistent for I the past seven months. I hope it will continue.

I agree too. You can't let the two towns become free-for-alls if tourism is your goal.

Good to see at least part of the official story has been told. Now for the unofficial story.

When they catch a gringo tourist red-handed with a pXt@ they cannot do nothing as ho'ing is legal in the DR. But when they catch that same gringo tourist red-handed with some drugs on...eyyy ...that's where's the money! So they won't fight drugs, but ho'es. Because in ho'es there's no money for them.

Get rid of the guns and the drugs....there you have something....make is safe to go on Sosua beach after dark....get rid of eyesores like the big friggin hole across from the Shark bar. Have power that is reliable and water that is safe to drink. Nope...the street vendors are the problem...too many girls in town...that is the problem.
Once third world....always third world.

Great hope they keep it up. No reason to have street-walkers-underaged girl-and as far as drugs--If the idiot tourist didn't buy drugs there would't be drug dealers DAH??? I have no problem with Politur busting tourist and making them pay big time--If you got a problem with the cops--Don't go to Sosua stay home and do your drugs there- Sosua won't miss you and niether will anybody else.

Might there be a link as to the type of tourist that comes for girls also the type that keeps drug business going? There is the "old guy" tourist group that probably keeps the Viagra drug business going but probably the younger "stag party" type tourist keeps the other drug business going. So possibly getting rid of girls first may solve some of the drug problem automatically by getting rid of those stag party tourists. Obviously the Viagra dealers should be worried about their long term sales volumes since that would be impacted too.

You might be quite right about that but---Who can they make the most $$$$ off of--I would think the tourist who come to party hardy and have money to burn. It should slow the drug trade a little.

1. Samana gets new aqueduct
President Leonel Fernandez was in Samana yesterday to formally inaugurate the Samana aqueduct. The areas of Las Terrenas, Carolina, Abra Grande, Atravesado, El Buen Pan, El Coson, La Bonita, La Ceiba and La Barbacoa in the northeastern province of Samana are benefitting from the new water supply. During the ceremony, President Leonel Fernandez opened the valves of the newly constructed aqueduct serving the Samana peninsula. The director of the National Institute for Potable Water (INAPA) Mariano German said that the Coson River is the main source of the water for the aqueduct. He said the new intake system, pumping station, water treatment plant and laboratories cost RD$858 million and provide 260 liters a second to the communities served. The aqueduct has its own electricity generator to insure continued water supplies.

? Here is our new water system in Las Terrenas. We will be one of the first towns in the DR where you will be able to drink the water. This great water system will be inaugurated next month. The total cost is more than 16,000,000$. Everyone in Las Terrenas will have water 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

A large Brazilian company won the contract, the storage tank was built by the Americans and the water purification system was built by the Israelis. This is a state of the art system and is located in our beautiful Coson area.
The elites in Santo Domingo all have homes here and they want to make sure the great Las Terrenas area is the best area in the Dominican Republic. Contact us if you would like a tour of the plant.?

Muggy,

Nope, they wouldn't get any trouble from me - nor did I give them any trouble when I lived there all those years.

You are still a plonker, though.
