Guess I'm not reading the ones you are

You do not read newspapers? It is discussed all over the World. In all possible languages that you might speak. Leaders of a former military superpower cut their nuclear arsenals without even asking for any cuts in return.

Giving away Far East islands to China.

Playing deaf and blind to Japanese legislative move to reclame the Kurils.

15 years. Black spot was sent to Pu and Me to give them time to pack suitcases and to run to a Caribbean Island.

Weak economy pushing Russia to arms deal: Biden | Reuters

Still looking for links (Joe says?)

Obama, Medvedev agree to reduce nuclear stockpiles "This was as of June" looks bilateral to me.

Kurils nothing shows on internet, This is still disputed with Russia, Japan can do nothing without an agreement with Russia, Then then can sign a peace treaty from the end to WWII to Present. Their legislators can posture all they want but still is under Russian Control.
Kuril Islands dispute

and Pu and Me ? no idea what your talking about

Not sure what month or date this will happen but lot of indicators poiting that it can happen this year with the swine flu coming Obama can call Martial Law and out Patriots Gun Owners and people against the New World Oder and Vaccination in camps then they can also get a bank holiday for a few days and announce The Amero too.
This is Scary but the truth. Gerald Celente international forecaster thinks 2012 will be the year it all happens. I say we see with this upcoming swine flu thing and how far the dollar goes in the next few months. Gosh this will get bad. Start praying now Folks, Rockero..

Nice piece of commentary from Manzana. Yes, the last deflationery spiral was called the Great Depression.

The Dominican economy is certainly tied to the U.S., however, I believe that the balance of the D.R.'s treasury reserves, now has swayed to the devastating effect of political corruption, whereas, no matter how the world economy behaves, the party in power, whether the PLD or PRD, has only one goal: to enrich themselves through commissions and graft from continued lack of transparency as to what is being spent by whom and to whom is receiving.

No matter how much any incumbent Dominican president wants to move the country forward, it's not going to happen without severe punitive action against corruption. For the deputies and senators in office, the political enrichment will continue through their ability to stifle transparency, siphon funds from their bloated expense accounts. Meanwhile, they will lament that the country's treasury is broke and that they have to approve more foreign loans, or raise taxes on the Dominican people to keep the country solvent.

All this, while the country has little or no social services with dismal spending on education.

With the bigger factors of corruption, the electricity subsidy draining the national treasury to a dry river bed, .. that U.S. Economy actually does not play into an overwhelming factor as to how the Dominican economy will go forward.

In fact, I believe that even with the U.S. economy in great shape, the D.R. will continue to spend itself in poverty with bloated government payrolls, an endemic trait of Latin American countries, in which clientelism is rampant.

Examples must be made of politicos who rob with no chance of getting caught,
get thrown in jail for life and everything that you and your family owns gets taken away and giving to the people that you are suppose to represent.

WOW! That's a lot of connecting. Let me get this straight: new currency, swine flu, martial law, gun owners, camps, bank holiday...is that right? And who is Gerald Celente?

DR peso is (mostly, usually) pegged to the dollar so it stays pretty stable in relation to the dollar. The exception in my experience was when Hippo was President and the peso fell to 50 to the dollar.

As cobraboy has pointed out, there is still a high demand for US Dollars on the world money market.
The US Economy IS SLOWLY recovering, it's manufacturing capability is being re-focused on "GREEN" production, new markets are being exposed that were previously submerged due to reluctance of the manufacturing community.
The US is committed to a Global Economy and to all the pitfalls that accompany that effort.
The US Labor Market is stagnated by the ongoing efforts of the Labor Unions leadership of ever seeking more of the business profits for their constituency, disregarding that that effort is the root cause of the massive exportation of millions of jobs to foreign labor markets where "union power" is not overly evident nd wages are far below those of the US.
The surrender of "protective tarrifs" by the US has further enhanced the demise of the manufacturing industry, particularily in the clothing and "ready-to-wear" industry. Those jobs were lost in the early 60's and no-one saw the "handwriting on the wall" of things to come, or else, completely ignored the warning signs flashing at the intersections.
The Auto Industry's holding on to archaic philosophy of "monster cars" and powerful engines, coupled with their reluctance to forcefully demand quality workmanship from the labor force, is finally being addressed in the form of more and better quality, more economic engines and safer engineering.
Reluctant as I am to admit this, our political system is being overtaken by incompetant political parties and we are begining to look more like a Third World country with all the accompanying corruption, greed and incompetance so indemic to those political entities.
The really underlying question is this: Will the US recover and again become the World Leader and Economic Power and all that accompanies that position?
MY ANSWER is a little ambiguous.
I truly think that only the complete overhaul of BOTH of the major political parties, the elimination of the lobiest driven society of our nations capital, the removal of the "hands-off" philosophy of organized religion by our government (the Constitution not-withstanding), the reining in of trial/court actions applying current knowledge to events and conditions of the past where that knowledge did not exist. I think that is called "Tort Reform", correct me if I am wrong.
These are but a few things that come to mind amoung the myriad of questions that need to be answered by better and more educated minds than mine.

You guys need to quit blaming political parties and blame the people. It's the ignorance, sloth and greed of the folks who go to the polls and vote that created the problem.

Politics is a mirror image reflection of a democratic culture.

Blame us, not "them."

The same is true in the DR. Complain about politics and politicians, but they are what the DR IS.

While you are correct in your assertion that the political parties are but a reflection of the segments of the population which supports them, it is also instructive to recognize that the basic philosophy which underpins those parties is controlled by the "jicky-jack used car salesmen" that drive and guide the thinking of the supporting population.
I am of the opinion that SINGLE TERMS for the incumbents of BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS would make for better, more focussed legislation and less haranguing of the constituencies by political inuendo and out an out misguidance by the ones seeking office.
We allow, as a population, the politicians to hoodwink us into voting for their rhetoric, which has very little substance and has become couched in nebulous assumptions and promises. "Change you can believe in" is a good example of such ambiguous meanderings by charismatic orators, backed by millions of dollars in constant bombardment of such rhetoric in the media.
To fully understand such, one must be, at minimum, a degreed graduate of a first-rate college. How many citizens have that qualification? Very damn few.
I am of the persuasion that political parties and politicians must begin to state exactly what thier platforms are and just how each plank of that platform fits into their solutions for "GOOD GOVERNMENT".
If I've said too much, then beat me over the head with my own words.
Time to clean house and get our country back on a path of sensability and integrity.

I too, hold little hope that the people of the US will ever come together and act as one with regard to "term limits" for legislators.
Given the underlying furor of the present population, however, that may just come to fruition in the near future.
The November elections could just be the forecast for such an event. We just must wait and see what the results will be.
We, as a nation are becoming fractured in the manner of Italy with that nations numerous political parties. If that trend continues, we just may see a change in the structure of out government over the next decade or two.
Who knows? Not me for sure, but I can only hope we survive the increasing trend towards a Socialist form of economics and the accompanying government.

Initially members of the house and senate were 10x more likely to be farmers than lawyers. Many of them lost money to serve their terms. I would hardly refer to these as the "good old days" because back then only (white) male property owners were allowed to vote. The federal government had a much smaller role in daily life back then and most Americans neither knew nor cared who "their" representatives were or how they voted on the issues of the day.

We will never see single term limits in congress and I doubt that we'll ever see term limits of any length for that matter. It's all about ranking and committees and the most tenured members get the most coveted committee seats, especially chairmanship. That's where the power is and the ranking committee members decide who gets what portion of federal expenditures. I have never seen a committee chair allow federal dollars to be redirected from their home districts.

Why would an 80 year old Man who has served in congress for half a century, qualifies for a retirement which provides better than most people's day jobs and is under indictment not want to just retire and live out the rest of his days in peace and comfort? Because as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee he has more power than most people ever dream of and power is the most intoxicating drug that there is.

There are 25 congressional committee offices and the key to this level is and always has been decided by longevity and party affiliation (majority party appoints chairpersons). This is where the democrats and republicans lose their party identities and take there respective places at the trough to feed, hand in hand.

Take for example the House Armed Services Committe. Check the membership:

U.S. House of Representatives, House Armed Services Committee

..and then ask yourself which States receive most of the defense spending. This is why the people of Texas, California, Forida, Arizona, New Jersey, Virginia, Missouri, Georgia, Maryland and New York keep sending those same guys back to Washington over and over as their increasing seniority propels them into increasing levels of influence and power to direct public funding (JOBS) to their constituents districts.

Man, I don't know about that whole "path of sensibility and respectability" thing. When was that, exactly? The crash (part II) will come, the small people will suffer and those who are already suffering will suffer a bit more, we'll take some time to pick up the pieces and during the next great depression you will find that just like during the last one, some will amass great fortunes in the midst of all that pain and suffering. Any place where tears are shed, there's always money to be made.
