miamigringo: Since you mentioned the beach, I hope you are aware that Santo Domingo has none.

As previously mentioned, the airport is actually closer to Boca Chica than Santo Domingo. We decided to spend the first night and day of our April 2002 trip at Boca Chica to unwind after a long day of flying and hanging around airports. Ended up spending 2 days/nights there! We liked it so well that we also spent the last day and night of our vacation there also!

That might be a possibility for you, too. First day/night at the beach in Boca Chica then on to the big city.

It is a little longer ride but I'm leaning torward going an settling in my hotel as I am getting in in the pm and head out early the 3rd day early on a bus to the beach possibly get a cheap place there for night or two. MG
