I am looking for recommendations for areas to stay in Santo Domingo. I am 40s SWM, no spanish (please beat me up on that one at the end of your recommendations). I would prefer safe, close to public transportation, nightlife (I refer you back to the single part). A gym that is nearby is a plus. I plan on relaxing for about a month, experiencing the culture, meeting a woman that speaks a little english hopefully (or maybe I could use flashcards or hand signals). Just generally walking about during the day and having fun at night. Are there nightspots that don't require me to speak spanish? I appreciate your assistance and promise to learn some phrases before I visit and make every effort to leave a good impression of american travelers.

Thanks

Zona Colonial, or just outside, in Gazcue.

You are always close to public transportation, so no problem.

Gyms I don't know about, but I hear there are a lot of basic places that just have weights and such.

Nightlife in the Colonial Zone probably doesn't require Spanish. There are some bartenders that ONLY speak English.

If you chose to visit La Venezuela (I suggest you don't, but to each his own), I imagine more Spanish is needed.

You are on your own about women.

Good luck.

I agree you have two choices the Colonial Zone and the Malecon. You can visit Ave. Venezuela, but one of the Dominican you are going to come across on the Malecon or the Conde will have to accompany you.

You will be able to spot him easily, he will be the one saying " My friend, my Friend, do you speak english?"
