Don't you just love people who blame the events of:

100,200,300,or longer, years ago on their lack of progress today!!!!My grandfather left Holland about 100 years ago with the clothes on his back, and his wife.He raised 14 children, and built a coal and oil distribution business in Illinois. He barely spoke English! He didn't need "ESL" classes!
I guess he could have waited for "Welfare" to come along to take care of him and the kids!

That's nothing. When I was a boy, I had to walk to school 5 miles every day without shoes - uphill both ways.

Welfare? If he moved from Holland to the US approx. 100 years ago, then he moved before the Great Depression. That means that Welfare and all those other socialist programs accepted in moderation in the US and Elsewhere came into existence as a consequence of the Great Depression in the 1930s, less that 100 years ago! Of course he couldn't wait for welfare when it had not existed. Also, of course even if Welfare existed he would probably still had created his business since that is what he probably heard that could be done in the US. The difference between his dreams and that of modern immigrants is that he could achieve his dream because he was probably better accepted by society (especially since he was Dutch). In the contrary, poor non-whites are moving to traditionally white rich countries nowadays, and they are finding some barriers that were not there 100 years ago to many (though not all) immigrants. In addition, today if an immigrant feels that he/she can't achieve his/her dreams in their host country, the option of living off the government sounds better than moving back to their original country. Of course, 100 years ago there was no welfare to speak of, so that person would have probably persisted until they succeeded.

Could you explain to this poor ignorant foreigner what your post is trying to convey?

My point is that Mr. Colon's family that migrated to the US from Holland about 100 years ago had the choice of either working their butts off or starving, since welfare programs were not in place in the US (or anywhere for that matter) 100 years ago.

Of course, if they would have arrived after the Depression, they would have had the choice of trying to fulfill their dreams and if their effort falls short from success, then there is always welfare.

Its important to note that I am not saying that Mr. Colon's ancestors would have been lazy if Welfare was an aption, I don't. People that were lazy in those times lived in ramshackle slums on the riverfronts of places like Manhattan and Brooklyn as well as other major American cities, slums that resemble the types that you see in the outer edges of major Dominican towns.

Also, the only reason I mention this is because Mr. Colon makes reference to his ancestors ambitions to succeed and not receiving welfare. The truth is that even if they wanted to, they couldn't receive welfare because it was not a reality 100 years ago. Thats pretty much all.

BTW, I don't think you are a poor ignorant foreigner, you are just a person that think according to your way of being and as such, not everything that you or anybody thinks would be at par with what others think of the same situations.

I stretch out my message to make people think about what I am posting. I just don't like to have dull conversations, I like to have others disect and think about what I am saying. That way I get a good structured and very well defined conversation out of it. Many people that talk to me in person would tell you that talking to me is almost like a skill all of its own. I tend to let people know exactly what I mean, but some how they must dig a bit to figure it out, despite staring at them right to their faces.

And where do you think Mexico got California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Montana from? As a matter of fact, did the Spanish have any rights to Mexico?

My dear departed dad had a saying for your attitude "the pot is calling the kettle black". In other words, they are both black!!!

The truth is Mexico never "got" those states you mention from anybody. Those territories made up more than half of that nation's territory. They were not an appendix to it, they were always an integral part of it. When Mexico became independent from Spain, all of Mexico became independent.

As always, Pib, this thread has gone far off into left field!
I strongly suggest the padlock since the main thrust has lost it's momentum and has become an exercise in futility.

Are these complements or sarcasms? I'll accept it as neither just to be on the "safe" side under the assumption.

All I got to say is that I research alot and I am constantly reading and studying different aspects of things, life, government, society, etc. I just like to learn and on this board (as well as in other places) I have a chance to display whatever it is that I have learned along the way. Some people praise it, other criticize, but I am always confident that the info. that I am putting out there is from good to great because of the heavy background that holds my ideas up. Only a heavier background could have the ability to crack my ideas foundations.

Nal0whs, if I gave you much thought, I suspect I wouldn't like you. You may be the most arrogant person I have ever chatted with!!!

Really?! Well, I guess I can't please everyone!

BTW, I don't consider myself to know everything. I just happen to know about much of the stuff being said on this board. If you notice, I don't even respond in 3/4 of all the threads on DR1! But, I do my research before putting ideas forward. And about you thinking of my way of thinking as being arrogant, then I guess I can't please the entire world!
