We're leaving for Cabarete on Tuesday and I'm making my packing list. Any must-bring items you can think of? I'm bringing sunscreen in several SPFs, several swimsuits, comfortable clothes for warm weather. Should I bring jeans?

Also are there beach umbrellas or beach tents for sale in town? How about raincoats? I'm having trouble finding raincoats for sale here.

Anything else you can think of?

Thanks!

You can rent a beach umbrella, if it stops raining. Make sure you bring several small umbrellas, light waterproof windbreakers, baseball hats, and extra condoms, when you and your boyfriend get bored with each other.:bunny:

Definitely bug spray, benadryl, immodium, any medications that you might need, bandaids, antibiotic cream, water shoes, pants if you plan to go horseback riding, snack foods (very expensive to buy there).

Small Umbrellas

Be prepared to "donate" those small umbrellas on departure from POP.

You should bring jeans, and a nice dress or two, for evening wear. You could get by with just shorts, but there are times when it nice to dress up. You don't have bring anything expensive, just some comfortable clothing.

When my daughter visits, she always bring a few inexpensive dresses with her, and she usually ends up giving one or two as gifts to friends she meets.

However, you already mentioned the most important items, so you should be okay with what you have already packed. you seem while prepared for anything.

Most importantly, bring a good attitude and a smile. The rest of the stuff will take care of itself.

Raincoats are not often worn in the DR. When it rains, most people just stay inside until it clears up. Moto concho drivers will wear ponchos once in a while, but more often it's a modified garbage bag.

One thing to add to your list is a simple key-chain bottle opener in case you want to buy beer in a store and have it in your room or on the beach. I'd also bring a small 12can beer cooler like this:

Even if you do not drink beer, it's handy for bottled water/ice and it's also good for packing fragile items. Target carries them among many other places.

Scan or make a copy of your passport. Emailing an image of it to yourself is even better.

If you have an expensive cell phone, you may want to spend $20 on one that you won't mind losing as much. If you bring a laptop, bring a surge protector.

Yes on the jeans.

I find a bank deposit bag or other pouch is handy for important docs, like airplane tickets and things you might normally keep in a wallet. In general don't carry anything in your wallet unless you really need it. Make sure you have access to your credit card companies' numbers in case you lose a card.

Wow, PeterInBrat, you're an expert! - cooler bag is excellent idea - cold drinks are pricey on the beach, you'll pay off your investment in the bag with the savings - also, scanning and emailing documents! Love it!
- A couple of small wallets or pouches to carry large denominations separately
- a small, light-weight powerful flashlight, if you think you might go off the beach at night (many parts of the street are not well lit, and very uneven)
- a washcloth if you are addicted to using one (I've found many places here do not regularly stock washclothes in the bathroom)
- I would bring umbrellas only if you have lots of extra room ... this time of year, we usually only get "flash showers", not all-day rains, and if you do get wet ... how much does it really matter?
- mosquito repellant and feminine hygiene are premium prices here, cheaper to bring with you if you need
- magazines, books, sudoku and crosswords for the beach, if you want that stuff (you won't easily get it here)
- you can now get basic potato chips and chocolate bars here, but if you want snackies for the beach like nuts, trail mix, seeds, granola bars, etc., may want to bring with you (keep in mind that you may prefer fresh fruit snacks while here)
- a pair of sturdy sandals / shoes for more active excursions, and some kind of backpack or carryall
- as a tourist in Cabarete, you're only likely to wear jeans if you go horseback riding, or if you prefer them for nightclubs rather than a skirt or dress - your call to bring them

Cooler

Are you staying in a hotel or renting a place of your own? We just got back from renting a villa for a month and the one thing I wish I'd brought was a cooler. Next time we'll bring one and use is as a suitcase to bring it down. Would have been really useful and to buy one there is quite pricey.

Bring me a bag of yellow lemons and I will do anything you want.

If you go to Cabarette I will buy you drinks at Jose Oshays which is right on the beach and is an American Sports Bar/ Irish Pub.

They have all the exotic drinks served in a whole coconut or hallowed out Pineapple

Seriously I need lemons for vodka tonics as limes don't suffice!

Will pay triple the cost at a minimum

Bring "Afterbite" to stop the itch of mosquito bites. I never leave home without it when going to the DR!

Make sure the mossy spray is at least 23% - or it will not work. By the off heavy woods or something like that. The other crap is a waste of money.

AND if you and your friends have rooom - go to the dollar store and buy some school supplies - pencils, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners etc. Skip books and paper - too heavy. It is back to school time and the kids are in desperate need!

And yes at least one collapseable umbrella for your bag. Put it in your checked luggage with the lemons and you are fine.

A couple pair of shorts. Couple tops. Bathing suit. 2 pairs of shoes. 2 Zp lock bags, when it rains, they keep your walet dry. Copy of your passport, lockup your passport, carry the copy. It's all you need. Anything else you need you can buy here. You don't need a dress here. Everything here is pretty laid back.

I'll probably be bringing quite a few dresses. I think they're the most comfortable way to go in warm weather. But they are almost all casual-cotton or jersey.

How bad is the mosquito situation? I'm one of those people who gets bitten a lot, but I've never really been one to use bug spray because I don't really like dousing myself in poison :/ But if it's THAT bad, maybe I'll cave.

And what's this about Hurricane Earl? I'm flying out into Puerto Plata on Wednesday, do you think my flight will be effected?

Thanks for all your advice!
