TAKING THE MYTH OUT OF SHIPPING A CAR TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Here is an example.
A customer required us to bring their 2007 Toyota Camry to the Dominican Republic.
The car was at an address in Orlando, Florida and Shiplane Transport Inc. was requested to transport the car to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for the owner.
The car was collected from Orlando and delivered to the Port of Miami. The cost for this service to move the car from Orlando to the Port of Miami was USD 250.00.
In Miami the car was cleared by U.S Customs, in order to prove that the Original title did not have a Lien and that the car had not been reported stolen. The cost of this clearance USD 90.00.
The car then shipped on board a roll/on roll off vessel (roro) from Miami to Santo Domingo at a cost of USD 900.00.
On arrival in the Dominican Republic the vehicle was subject to Dominican Customs Clearance and duties. Following the car?s arrival the necessary paper work was created to clear customs at a cost of USD 450.00.
Dominican Customs determined that the taxes and duties for a 2007 Toyota Camry was PESOS 250,969.49 ( USD 6,765.00). This price includes the Dominican License plate Fee. The Duties and Taxes were paid to Dominican Customs on behalf of the owner of the vehicle by a Banca De Reserva Certified Check made out to Dominican Customs. A second check in the amount of Pesos 3,428.00 (USD 93.00) was paid to the Collector of Customs for Customs Services. Thereafter the car was released.
While the Dominican License Plate fee is included in the above charge, the client still needed to pay the Marvete fee of Pesos 2200 .00 (USD 61.10 USD).
Port Charges on the cars arrival amounted to USD 90.00 for the Port Authority (This charge is applicable for up to 7 days storage, had the clearance taken longer, then additional port charges would have applied).
A charge was also paid for offloading the vehicle from the ship to dock in the amount of USD 75.00.
The customer requested that the car be delivered to Punta Cana at a cost of USD 700.00. The car was transported via a special truck, since the car has no insurance.
The total cost to this client for moving his 2007 Toyota Camry from Orlando to Punta Cana was USD 9,474.10.
Had this customer imported the car within 90 days of the issuance of his Dominican Residency, he would have been entitled to a 60% reduction of the duties charged by Dominican Customs which is in this case would have amounted to USD 2,433.00 on duties USD 1677.74 on the plate fee.
If this customer had been a Dominican Citizen or married to a Dominican Citizen, then the requirement to import the vehicle within 90 days would not apply and the customer would be entitled to the rebate on Duties and License plate fees without any limit in time.
This owner opted not insure his 2007 Toyota Camry against any damage in transit while shipping. Had he chosen to do so, he could expect a charge of 2.5% of the declared value of the vehicle. Owners have to be aware that the maximum liability on any one item, covered by the shipping line is USD 500.00. This needs to born in mind when considering whether or not to insure the vehicle.
