I may have read this thread wrong, but doesn't it say top Dominican Musicians? Nobody is discussing say, the top 10 names in music here? What does dance steps have to do with this thread? Just my point of view.

Ramon Orlando itself can be counted on to the best musicians performers in the DR, as he makes magic with his piano, you can see him perform in the posted videos. Another name to mention is Katarey, the JLG percussionist who died in the late 80's in a tour in Venezuela.

I love music and appreciate good musicians. My question would be: why do these excellent Dominican musicians play similar types of beats most of the time? Don't they get bored? Is this some sort of expression of national pride to play merengue and bachata most of the time?
I like to move to these beats, but it does get boring to do the same thing over and over again in a class. Students get bored too
We, instructors always look for variety of styles to keep students occupied. There is not that much variety in the Dominican music unfortunately.

So, the audience expects musicians to play certain beats, and they behave accordingly to get paid. But what do Dominicans themselves like to listen? Only merengue, salsa and bachata? Maybe they just don't have as much access to different genres of music as people in the US and Europe? They would probably like variety of styles if they got to know those a little better.
Most likely those musicians know how to play different styles of music, for example Joe Nicolas the bass player is a rock/jazz player originally, but that economically isn't feasible in the DR, so he opted to play merengue in bands here so he can get his "sustento" for him and his family. It is the same with the guitar and bass players in Aventura, they both are rock player at heart.

When I lived in the DR, I listened to radio 6, quatachita(I don't know the exact spelling). There were a lot of love songs played back then, in 1964-67 when I was there. Our maid, Mersadies, listened to it and would teach me spanish, I forgot it because no one spoke it to me when I returned to the US. If any DR musicians want to break into the world scene, they must sample what the rest of the world is listening too. Spanish speaking countries everywhere have their top 10 list, as well as other language venues. Three minute tunes are the best bet because the average person gets bored after that and tunes out. I am an internationally known musician in the english speaking world and have several 3 minute tunes that are played on the radio. One of my tunes plays for 15 minutes and 07 seconds, Epiphany, is all music played with 2 insruments, but sounds like more. If you listen to it, try to guess which ones I used, if you can.

IMHO, no everyone can appreciate the merenge, half the fun is listening to it, the other half is dancing to it. you all probably would like the merenge of the 80's, as it was made to listen and less dancing, it had more sence of direction and whole lot of words. todays merenge is mambo, made to dance and to make you heart pump with your partner in the dance floor..good stuff.
Just before you do close the thread - my favourite bandleader is Raulin Rosendo.He does great salsa. I think he should be more famous. Only the locals know about him normally.

And while I am about it - the Dominican Republic has some pretty amazing trumpet players. The average, run of the mill lead trumpet player in a merengue band can play high fast and accurate - and do it all night. I played pro for many years so I know about this stuff. What they do is bloody tricky.

"No le pegue a la negra" is really titled "Rebeli?n," and which I consider the second-best Salsa tune of all times.
By the way, I've been thinking about a post with my favorite five Salsa tunes, hoping to engage folks in Salsa discussions. But I'm afraid the mods would not see a D.R. connection, though, even if I include "Juliana" by Dominican-born Cuco Valoy.
