i agree Windy. It’s not about military strength. It’s about the long haul. An intervening military force of any size will need to become occupiers for years to ensure Haiti stays peaceful and progresses democratically.

The UN definitely needs to be changed for the better. The elimination of the Big Boys Club and their veto powers in the Security Council would be a good first step. That might level the UN political playing field and increase their credibility.
Agreed that any force entering Haiti will have to be overwhelming and also be there for generations to make any real difference.

The UN will not improve and should just disappear. Veto powers are just one reason for the impotence.

We have two things that cannot be fixed.

I hope team Luis has a plan in place to prevent the flood of Haitians who will be trying to
in the DR once the fighting starts.

It's hard to imagine they don't.

But what about the traditional bribes that are already paid on a daily basis? Until those are stopped, and they are the status quo, it's all window dressing.
I think if we see groups en mass caravan style (hello NGOs) they may not be so willing to accept bribes as often
especially if the local media keeps a camera in their face.

I’m hoping he puts the pressure on the UNHCR and forces them to take care of any refugees on the Haitian side of the border.

Whey would a refugee agency associated with the worthless UN help people in their own native country?
How can one be a refugee if you never left home? For sure the DR is going to let those guys set up shop on DR territory.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is a United Nations agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with over 18,879 staff working in 138 countries as of 2020

Windy,

The Palestinians displaced from the North to South Gaza are receiving food, shelter, and medical services from UNWRA, UNHCR, and the UN sponsored WHO. UN assistance is not limited to refugees outside their country.

If Abinader refuses to allow Haitian refugees into the DR, they UN has no choice. They have to help them because the Intervention is a UN led initiative funded by the US and other countries.

I think the blow back from the Dominican population would be extreme.

Once the Kenyans are gone and the UN defeated, as it always has been the case in Haiti since the start, the gangs will be so strong they'll have carte blanche to expand wherever they want. You all know the "El Masacre se cruza a pie". Each Haitian neighborhood in the DR will be controlled by one of the strongest gangs. By the sheer number of people, they'll take over.

Or not.

Well, I do agree that the Kenyan's will be defeated, but that is about it.

The Palestinians have a complete scam. More aid than the rest of the world put together. The DR already has more than a million Haitian refugees, they just aren't official designated by the UN.

As I mentioned about the UN doing such good jobs and another chance to fail in Haiti soon:

There is no IF Abinader prevents refugees from coming in. That will not be allowed to happen.
I think Edenorte and CORAAPPLATA get their employees from those that don't measure up working at the UN.

You must have a slanted view because you live in Las Terrrenas. I'm guessing immigration is already working on a plan for the Haitians there.

It's getting a little ridiculous.

ANY modern trained and equipped military can land and secure Haiti. A battalion of most modern trained troops would be all that is needed. It would only take 1 or 2 companies of U.S Marines to secure most of the city over a weekend. Someone mentioned "collateral damage", what a joke. Most of Haiti is collateral damage now. The problem is after the troops leave; things will return to the way they were within a few days. The troops will not be able to change Haitian culture and the factions that are fighting each other.

The logic behind that is that the DR already has a lot of Haitians, more than most countries except Haiti itself. From the Dominican point-of-view, the UN asking the DR to intentionally accept even more Haitians even as refugees is to completely turn a blind eye that the country already has a lot of Haitians. Dominicans will not see that as fair and it does cones through as the UN/international community simply want the DR to take control of Haiti, the proberbial “echarnos ese muerto encima.”

The idea the DR is the country doing the most for Haitians given its size and ability is well ingrained in the people simply by things such as how much of the public health goes to Haitians (particularly giving birth), how many Haitians attend public schools, the large presence of of Haitians in several working fields, etc.
