not sure if this is right place to start this thread......did a quick search and found that nobody has yet started one on this subject either.

on the news a couple of days ago, the british ambassador to the dr, steven fisher, more or less said that due to corrupt practices on the part of dom rep government officials, one british company was forced to shut up shop and leave the country. i think it was whilst at one of those brit-dom chamber of commerce meetings.

apparently vincho is now asking for names and details (diario libre).

anyone has any idea of which british company was obliged to do this?
or do you think it is just the british embassy and their likes stirring up stories to try and get their point over?

This is one of the funniest things I have read in a long time.

In his view it could’ve been a case in which those companies sought excessive benefits, but across the desk found an honest official willing to enforce the law.

seeing 'honest" and "official" in the same sentence referring to something about the DR makes my eyes burn

My favorite comment from a Dominican official to an extranjera is "they (you) just don't know how we do things here."

Please elaborate .....And which way would that be? Clue in us "less enlightened" people. To learn about a country and how things are done we need to be told, in no uncertain terms. Please be blunt and to the point. We are all used to the process of our own countries but to learn the process in another country is tough. So here is your chance to clue the the rest of the "uninformed" world into how the DR functions, that is the things that foreigners need to know before they are fleeced! Anybody, please telll me. Thanks

yes, a more appropriate quote would be: "They (you) just don't know how we DON'T do things here.

We think it was "Shell"

olly

would hardly think so....most of shell upped and left a long time ago. not sure why a big company like that would even bother letting the dom rep british embassy in on their goings on anyway.

if it was a big company, i would have suggested british american tobacco......they have been advertising their dunhill brand quite heavily recently. not sure how much of a presence they have here though.

thought it would be a much smaller entity, ..................if in fact the story is true anyway.

Not much, only a sales office in SDQ. And besides that, regardless the name, BAT is a 100 % owned American company.

trying hard.....but can't let this one go.

whilst i can accept that the dutch may have a legitimate claim to some of royal dutch shell ....i am not sure how you work out that BAT can be a 100% owned american company.

i am not saying you are wrong, i am just asking how did you come to that conclusion?
try to chuck something in your answer like, "my dominican mate told me ......blah, blah......" so the dr1 police don't pull us to one side.

Is there a reason why you want to know how I come to that conclusion? I don't see the relevance of your question either as nobody knows which company we are talking about in this thread.

And now back to the OP...and some comments:

BAT owns the old Tabacalera and produces Habanero cigars and Montecarlo, Casino and Constanza cigarettes...in a very tough environment. Their factory is in Villa Gonzalez...the former Compa??a An?nima Tabacalera. The old CAT...

Wow, the translation software is getting very good! I'm impressed. it's certainly gotten better over the years. there's only a few mistakes because certain words are missing the Norwegian vowels (?), (?), and (?), and as a result, the translation software cannot recognize the word when its been misspelled with an english keyboard. It's supposed to say "I work in Oslo every summer and live in Gronlokka (a neighborhood within Oslo)."

"I speak and write bad Norwegian."
