the striking figure is the ADOLESCENT fertility rate - of women between 15 and 19 - in which the DR is nestled between Sierre Leon and Gabon, -- at 98 per 1000, has more than twice the rate of Puerto Rico 47

cuba 60
el salvador 75
costa rico 60
belize 70
jamaice 69

Then- from another study - from the health department - 29% of the births were to adolescents - 1.6% to mothers under 15. (almost 28% of the Cesarians were on adolescent mothers as well - remember that this will also reduce the fertility rate since more than two births via Cesarian section is dangerous - physicians are likely to recommend and perform sterilization after the second) - one report by the UNFPA - shows that Cesarians are perfomed at Los Minas and La Altagracia almost 40% of the time - which is an extremely high rate - so this rate - along with the sterilizations which might accompany them after the second birth -would perhaps account in part for the much lower birth rate over time.

reports indicate that 47% of Dominican women have been sterilized as their method of contraception

Even with fewer than two kids per woman, the population of the DR will increase for at least another 20 years. Ppl are living longer and the classic age pyramid will become more and more like a column. Around the world, regardless religion, women are having fewer kids and even fewer as teens.

No - it holds together - if you look at the birthrate here in 1980 - it was 4.5 - then you check out Doubling time under the wiki (still having trouble with the cut and paste) which is the formula for a population or whatever to double - you divide 70 by the growth rate - so you would have a doubling of the population in 16.6 years

so from 1980 to 1996 - from 4million to 8 million..

then from 1996 the birth rate is 3.07 // divide 70 double the population in 22 years

to a projected population of 16 million in 2018 if the birthrate had HELD at that 3.07 level of 1996

but it has lowered

(plus immigration and emigration -- plus an extended life expectancy)

A Kid in Boca Chica who's run errands for me since he was a teenager and is now 22 has 5 Kids by 5 Babymommas and he's as proud as he can be of the count.

This Kid is no dummy. He speaks 5 languages fluently and is known and liked by most everyone in town but with 0 career opportunity he is destined to a lifetime of hustling for scraps. His Kids will be Parents before they're 16 and the cycle will continue for generation after generation unless something happens to change the paradigm.

It's got to be difficult to think in terms of the future of your Kids when your own future is in doubt.

He should move to "DC", HE'LL FIT RIGHT IN!!!!

In DC he'd have a job making more money than you. Are you kidding? 5 language fluency? The IMF, World Bank, Intelsat and about 60 embassies in DC would be fighting over this Kid.....you? not so much....

You wrote DC , if you meant Washington DC, why would he fit right in? Are you saying DC is filled with Dominicans or Dominican looking people with no hope for a better future?

You should let people speak for themselves. Are you his ghost writer, if not you can't assume what he was referring

I read recently that Washington DC has the highest percentage of teen aged non married mothers.

The post wasn't about unwed mothers, but a place where someone's future is bleak, that's not the case in DC.

Now THAT is a true welfare mentality. You sound just like a trailer park welfare Mom waiting for her WIC card, her gub-o-mint check and her Obama phone.

Besides all that gub-o-mint free cheese you have another thing in common....

Low Expectations
