In a major step toward resolving the chronic parking shortage in Santo Domingo’s historic district, Mayor Carolina Mejía and the Presidency of the Republic officially broke ground on the José Reyes parking building on 20 April 2026. The project, located at the intersection of Calle José Reyes and Calle El Conde, involves an investment of RD$950 million and is expected to be completed in approximately 22 months.

The start of construction marks the end of a long period of inactivity for the site. The original structure was shut down five years ago due to severe structural vulnerabilities and subsequently demolished. Despite initial promises of a swift rebuild, the site remained vacant, exacerbating the significant traffic and parking challenges faced by residents, merchants, and tourists headed to the Colonial City.
