Construction begins on José Reyes St. parking building after five-year hiatus

In a major step toward resolving the chronic parking shortage in Santo Domingo’s historic district, Mayor Carolina Mejía and the Presidency of the Republic officially broke ground on the José Reyes parking building on 20 April 2026. The project, located at the intersection of Calle José Reyes and Calle El Conde, involves an investment of RD$950 million and is expected to be completed in approximately 22 months.

The start of construction marks the end of a long period of inactivity for the site. The original structure was shut down five years ago due to severe structural vulnerabilities and subsequently demolished. Despite initial promises of a swift rebuild, the site remained vacant, exacerbating the significant traffic and parking challenges faced by residents, merchants, and tourists headed to the Colonial City.

Modern infrastructure and capacity
The new seven-story facility is designed as a sustainable, multi-use urban hub. Key technical specifications include space for 242 vehicles and motorcycle parking area, electric vehicle charging stations, sensor-based LED lighting, rainwater harvesting system. The facility will feature a high-tech security infrastructure including automated access control, 24-hour video surveillance, and advanced monitoring systems to optimize operations.

Financed through extraordinary state funds provided by the administration of President Luis Abinader, the project aims to do more than just house cars. The building will feature seven levels integrating commercial areas and a 372.9-square-meter rooftop terrace intended for a private concession, offering panoramic views of the Colonial City.

Mayor Mejía emphasized that the project is central to the ongoing transformation of Santo Domingo into a more organized and accessible city. “Today, with the joy we all feel in our hearts, we formally begin this long-awaited construction,” Mejía stated during the ceremony, noting that the infrastructure will provide a “modern and safe solution” that aligns with the current needs of the emblematic area.
