Why is it that Americans come here and recognize poverty and poor living conditions when it is so common in any major city in the US?
Also, are blacks in the US less deserving than in the DR?
I don't see anything here that is not found in any Third World country...

You pretty much summed up what I have always said Being from an American ghetto, do you think I know crime? poverty? ghetto mentalities where people want meal tickets and feel people owe them free rides in life? You would be kidding me if you thought I did not.

The same stuff happens in American ghettos. People will actually rob you because they think you owe them a gold chain or a car. People will be fake friends and lie to you to get free stuff instead of working. People will have multiple children with different fathers and try to use the fathers for money so they do not have to work.

I think most people in this forum do not know what goes on in American ghettos. They do not have to leave the country to be in danger and see crime and poverty. Also, people from American ghettos have an edge in the DR because they know how to be careful and can recognize when someone is up to no good around them. I mean if they want to see some stuff, they can go to their nearest American ghetto and see it.

Dominicans in the US and the DR are the same as Puerto Ricans or blacks or even ghetto white people in trailer parks or ghetto rednecks.

Come on, you can't compare the living conditions - a ghetto and a campo barrio?

Show me a ghetto without running water, without a bathroom, without electricity, with dirt floors.

Even some US homeless people live better than that - they can go to a shelter or use public rest rooms if they want to. They also can get public assistance if they apply for it.

IMO, more dangerous in the US ghetto though.

The poverty is more fierce in the DR but there are many stories in the USA of people surviving only because they hustle drugs and rob people. Otherwise, they would have no water or electricity or anything. In the US, there is always that option for the desperate to sell drugs. Always. That is why the poverty is not as fierce. Although, think about what that does to the crime rates in our ghettos.

Ummm, Miss Jimenez....

What the hell does black people deserving anything have to do with this thread.
FACT:
This thread is about a DOMINICAN woman and her 7 children
FACT:
We have been discussing temporary and permanent ways to assist people like her
FACT:
We are now discussing the mindset of some people in poverty in different countries.

Still, I don't understand what black people deserving anything has to do with this thread.

SHALENA

Gringo:

Have you lived in a NY ghetto before?

Have you seen all the late model cars parked around these ghettos? Some people choose to live there, I hope you know!!!

Not all resort to selling drugs and other crimes.

Why is it that Americans come here and recognize poverty and poor living conditions when it is so common in any major city in the US?

What bothers you more, that it exists or that we notice?

Yes, perhaps we should get our house in order before we start trying to help others. Pretty much we are damned if we do or damned if we don't as a country. Personally, I like the part where we extend a helping hand when we see the need more than the one where we go in with guns blazing in the name of peace.

People in the ghetto tend to get their kids to school, because truancy charges pile up quickly when you don't. Basics are still afforded them, and the poorest in the US, I believe, actually live in rural areas like non-casino reservations and the Appalachians, not in those ghettos. Have you ever taken the time to see those?

I'll have to admit that I step around beggars in the DR, as I do in my hometown USA. HOWEVER, I also support causes in each, because I recognize their work makes a difference for those that they serve. Americans certainly don't have the market on giving, but if you don't think what we do makes a difference, let's hear you holler when we stop.

Would you rather I stayed in an AI, where I wouldn't be inconvenienced with the reality of the country, and would likely go home happier, richer, and with nicer pictures to post on facebook?

I get it, as guests in your country we should be better mannered. It'd get old to me too if all I heard was criticism about my country. Oh wait, I do.

And seriously, how can one not notice?

Well certainly one can do that in the DR, too, can't they?

And certainly there are more than one poster on the board who lived in those circumstances who decided they would take another way out--one that is also afforded to them--stay in school and get an education. Many people make their way out because they choose to, and if they don't hear it at home they hear it at school that they can make something of themselves.

Do-good companies fall over themselves these days trying to mentor kids. There is plenty of Title I money available to address the most important of demographic, the "african american male." I've been to paid trainings and books studies on this very demographic, although, you guessed it, we have no-one that fits that demographic in our school. (Guess I'm not supposed to say that out loud?) They still have more options than their counterpart in the DR.

What is a child with 6 hungry siblings who is not even in school ever going to hear? If you work hard, you can advance in your job? Stay in school?

I have met a lot of people from NYC and NEVER have they referred to the neighborhood as " MY GHETTO" NEVER!!!! I think he is getting the " Housing Projects" confused with neighborhoods. Gringobbachata7 NOBODY calls their home a GHETTO. Why do you keep using this word?

Three of the kids are special needs children. You can see it in the photo. I think mom was probably special needs too. Grandma's an enabler of some pretty irrational behavior. No one here is applauding how this family's conducting their affairs. But if we want to find ways to see less of these scenarios trying to understand how they arose will get more results than harsh judgmentalism. Good for everyone that shows compassion in even the smallest of ways. It doesn't always take something extraordinary to break a cycle, change the outcome of a life. Regardless of our many differing religious and philosophical viewpoints, the reality is that we're all that we have.

Can you give me some examples of having a "GHETTO" mindset 1 or 2 would be fine. Then can you give me example of having a mindset opposite of a "GHETTO mindset? I am not being a wiseguy I just do not understand when people say this.

BTW Do you believe this mother of 7 kids have a GHETTO mindset?

If you are that slow as to not see my point but only see that I used the word ghetto. I said it because I was talking about the ghetto mentality and mindset. It is a mindset, I was talking about how people think in many unfortunate cases and how it influences their decisions. But you probably are not able to comprehend that, it may be too complex for your tiny brain. I will just leave it there.

Has anyone read the comments on the article? They are more or less unanimous in saying that the mother is "irresponsible" at best and that lack of education is the main cause. There are also many offers of support.

Ghetto mindset:

1. Everything needs to be easy. Hard work is not a good idea, fathering kids is not a good idea. Breaking the law or doing a scam is better than a job. If it is hard, do not do it. Always take the easy way out in life.

2. People owe you something. If you are broke; the government, friends and family need to give you money. You should not be out working jobs and earning it yourself. They ower you free food, money for bills, big screen TVs, cars, jewelry, etc.

3. You want everything now. You need a kid now. You need a wife now. You need money now. You will not wait in life but you will do everything like having kids now.

4. Your order of importance. example: the car is more important than your home. getting your hair and nails done is more important that paying rent or buying food. wearing and buying desginer clothes is more important that paying the water bill. having the latest smartphone is more important than buying food. etc.

5. etc. ghetto mentalities could go on and on. it is a way that people think in ghettos around the world. It is a way of thinking that puts people into bad situations.

if you still dont get it, I give up on you.

WRONG!!

Ghetto Mindset:

1. I've been on 20 job interviews this week and 20 last week and nobody has called me back. This is HOPELESS!

2. I'm out of subway fare and have to walk downtown to look for work again. This is HOPELESS!

3. I've only got two hot dogs and three eggs left in the refrigerator and no money coming in. HOPELESS!

4. Okay, now I'm "underqualified" for that job in the mailroom and "overqualified" for that janitor position. HOPELESS!

5. I had to use the money I was going to use to get my "interview suit" out of the cleaners to buy food. I was hungry!

6. I was on the way to a job interview when stopped and questioned by some Cops because they thought I looked like somebody they were after. I was late for the interview and they cancelled me.

I didn't make this sh!t up. I experienced this as a young Man (with no kids, BTW) and later in life when I miraculously susrvived growing up in my neighborhood and my time in the military and fought for an education and developed my career and ended up at the table with other Fortune 100 Corporations Program Managers it never left me and I was still the hungriest Mofo at the table even though I earned more than most of them. That, Sir is a "GHETTO MENTALITY".

If you don't get it then give up on yourself.
