So if I've read the thread correct the fee would be $5 for the sim plus 10.55us for the weeks data, any activation fees and do I have to put a phone plan on the sim or can i just use data, also can you comment on the service coverage in puerto plata area?

Thanks for the information

Cheers

There shouldn't be any activation fees and buy that plan on your phone. Don't use data without purchasing the data, it will cost WAY more then 422 pasos. Last time I went to Puerto Plata, I was able to use data and phone calls without problem.

From what I understand you are on vacation for a week????
Just buy a cheapie phone already activated with "time" on it in Puerto Plata for RD$300-$400, that is all you need, instead of making this a whole ordeal.

You can use the WIFI on your iPhone to read email in the resort, make sure you turn off your roaming capabilities on take off!

Why do you need data for a week on vacation, are you that addicted to the internet and mail?

Ive heard that the wifi at the resort is shotty at best and $70 for a week... We are leaving our 7month baby boy (first child) in canada with his grandparents for the week, and my wife would like to be able to communicate freely via phone/facetime/email etc while we are gone. It was the trade off i had to make to get her to be able to leave him for a week... we both are in dire need of sometime alone together to relax and decompress... I figured if its $10us for a week of data, its well spent to know i can reply to whatever whenever, heaven forbid that i need to in a emergency. Ill consider the throwaway but i think facetime might be my #1 choice for calling back home.. and 700mb i think should suffice for usage if i try to use the free wifi where i can find it.

Good reasons...
It's true the data in resort is expensive.
And I might also add...
I find that now having internet with phone in pocket is like a having a dog collar around your neck. When I leave and I asked to call me in ABSOLUTE emergency, everything becomes emergency and I get the calls from work/family. There's no escape from it all like it used to. And with consistent errors from the work, if I don't receive/call at least 2-3 times a day, I get nervous.

What did you people do before cell phones?
I enjoy my time in the bathroom without being tethered to a smartphone.
I understand APPLE is coming out with the iToilet next quarter.
