some weeks ago, my tv decoder box would not turn on. the light did not even come on. that tells me that it had to do with input power, most likely a fuse. took it to POP Telecable, and the guy took it inside, came back 3 minutes later, and told me that it would be 400 pesos to repair it. i asked him what was the problem. he said that the input voltage surge blew up a transistor when there was the past power outage. he had to change the entire board. so, i ask him to show it to me..
he brings it out, and shows me a 10 microfarad 450 volt capacitor. i tell him ;"dude, that is not a transistor..it is a capacitor. besides, it has a 450 volt rating, so how can a surge from 110 volts blow it?" well, i still paid the 400 pesos, because i wanted to see my college games, but most repairmen here are useless crooks.
