there will be some trickle down benefits, yes. nobody here denies that. the main thrust of most of the discourse here is that the government told the people that when the ships came, there would be a cornucopia of riches and bountiful blessings pouring down upon the region, as far afield as Cabarete. they told them that each passenger spent on the average 100 dollars, and that is not necessarily true, because the average spend in the DR is way lower than that, and spend is not a matter that can be predicted with any meaningful accuracy. what some of us have been saying is that expectations have been raised by the politicos, and the merchants are in for a disappointment. even the motoconchos.

The average spend in the DR will go way up, due to the number/quality of excursions and the size, quality of facilities offered at Amber Cove compared to Samana and La Romana.

Ya know LambiMan,
I was thinking the same thing....but I don't know enough about the other ports to make the comparison.

It may be that this port will be a better destination - only time will tell.

Certainly, it will be a boon for the area and hopefully, RD tourism in general

If the cruise ships only keep people employed repairing the roads on the north coast I will consider that an incredible benefit.

Still no work to repair the bad section of road by Coconut Palms in Cabarete. Perhaps after the first few tour runs are made into Cabarete and some near misses are had there, repairs will be done.

If its posted on facebook isn't it automatically public, since one can share the post?

Not necessarily - depends on the person's privacy settings. No one can see any photos I post except my friends [and I think friends of friends], if someone copied and shared them I'd be unhappy. They're definitely not automatically public. That's why sometimes people put FB links on DR1 and others can't open the link/see what they're trying to share. And not all photos/posts can be shared, again depends on settings.

Keep them cruise ships coming. We both know what this thread will turn into when the "do good" people arrive in April. Peeps got cash and instead of flying off to Europe they will arrive here doing what they think is a good, helpful thing to do ....... but the expats will rip them apart.

Go la rep dom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, just like the first world....screw the poor people.

Question? Did not the opening of the port provide jobs for the poor? Metro hired how many people without jobs. Agora has how many new employees?

Sure Carnaval is out to make money but the trickle down effect has people waking up in the morning with a job to go to.

I just happen to be an expat that gets excited when this country moves in the right direction. Sure many things still are not perfect but improvement comes one step at a time.

GO la rep dom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just get frustrated. I don't know how many times I have carried buckets of water, in the dark, up to my gf's mothers place in La Union as the pressure will not reach the 3rd floor. I have spent some time lately in the hospital in POP, it is disgusting. There are soooo many people in the country struggling.....I just get frustrated.

Hear me, I hear you ................ when the poor get the nerve to really get p*issed off nothing will change. I have seen what you see on a daily basis.

Sorry MOD, back to cruise ship.

Anyone have an answer as to how many poor people now have a job because of the port?

400 direct jobs were created. i do not know how many of those went to foreigners who were brought in by carnival, i am sure some of their team folks are here to train, manage and so on.

Did people protest in POP?!

the squatters who were evicted last week were promised new houses by the governor of the province. just few days ago.

According to some eyewitnesses, Cruise passengers made it to Cabarete, and Shop and restaurant owners there were very happy, a couple were taken to see Playa Alicia (maybe a brief stop?) , but NONE to Sosua Beach , as if they were hiding the Ugly sister or something..
Can someone else on the ground confirm or deny ..

Simple solution I think. Let the "ladies" know if they are seen on the street cruise ship days they will be locked up and fined a month's salary. Sosua has it's ugliness but at the same time still has it's charm. Sosua beach with all the little shops I think a lot of tourists would enjoy seeing.
