Last night a well educated Dominican man told us at dinner that the Dominican people have a huge responsibility/part in why the Dominican is the way it is. He was very clear to say that foreigners are not the reason the country is in the state it is in. He also said accepting the Dominican way of life as a foreigner living here is one thing, pretending to know and understand is another. Only a Dominican truly knows, the rest just pretend. Living in the Dominican and getting continuing education does not make one Dominican or give one the ability to know and understand how a Dominican truly feels and thinks about his/her country. Another interesting comment was Dominicans have no respect for anyone who has such a high dislike for their home country, whether it is to their face or behind their backs. Why do think there is so much Dominican Pride amongst those living abroad he said, because they never forget where they came from. Interesting comments I thought.
It is interesting.
How did he suggest that Dominicans could increase the responsibility they take and in what areas?? I suggest they are not doing enough.
The frequently used statement that you can only understand something is by being there/live it is not so black and white as presented. I think that understanding can be acquired in many ways. Although we criticize chip for saying that he understands all things Dominican and all things gringo; I concede that he has some understanding (but not all). Dominicans consult with priests about marriage and they have not experienced it.
Regarding dislike that too is shaded and not absolute. Criticism of the DR is not absolute dislike for the DR. Even DV8 stays - there must be something good for her.
Not addressed by your post is how Dominicans could process criticism. This thread is a good example. Criticism is feedback that can be used to adapt a person, company or country. It needs to be objectively evaluated and appropriately responded to.
In this thread there is also a kitchen example of how Dominicans inappropriately process criticism.
So now we have two subjects that go together to slow the progress of this country. Dominican's not considering criticism for change and not doing enough to change the country.
you could have been having that conversation with someone from just about every country on earth.
It is interesting.

His comments about responsibility or lack of were more in the terms of " accepting" the way it is and not challenging it.
That is the point I am making criticism is free feedback. The subject of criticism can ignore, object to being criticised or ... Use the feedback to adapt. In this thread we have seen objecting labeled as Nationalism and ignoring it asd coping with it. Still have not heard from Dominicans who can use the feedback.
Now we're space cadets? What's next? Retards?Earth to space cadets one can't get in a masters program at PUCMM without having a bachelor's degree.
I am also a registered professional engineer in the State of Florida and I passed my FE and PE exam on the first attempts.

It seems we have now defined the problem: uneducated and unworldly populations like Dominicans find change to be threatening and putting forth the suggestion of change is threatening. It is threatening because they have no/limited control of their destiny. That has created a population that resists change or the suggestion of change.
One of the solution that is implied is that we should not suggest change. That is not a fix for the problem.
In my opinion the educated and worldly Dominicans should take responsibility for improving this country through change. Related to that they should stop complaining about criticism and instead use it to guide them. What have the Dominicans who have expressed dislike of criticism done to change this country other than complain that they don't like criticism?

Which Dominicans are you referring to? In this thread I'm not seeing Dominicans lash out against people who are suggesting change. I don't think Dominicans are against it...what they are against in this forum and outside of it is when foreigners make fun if everything dominican making it seem like we are hopeless and helpless. There is constructive criticism and there is the type that suggests that which is being criticized is inferior and less than...and that can be offensive. As if we are a nation of backward fools. It would make anyone be on the defense rather than be open to any suggestion that may be in fact valid.
Dominicans in fact usually think that anything non dominican is better especially if it's from up north or Europe.
I think what may bother some people is that we are proud of where we are from and many foreigners do not see why...they think there's nothing to be proud of.
Well, that is the point and the reason for objecting to criticism by Dominicans! It has nothing to do with the source or the message and all about maintaining power by a few.maybe educated and worldly Dominicans do not want the country to change. maybe the way it is suits them just fine. maybe they want to perpetuate the reality, in which a very small clique own the country, and access to the finer things in life. they do not want any egalitarian advances which will promote situations in which Ramfis starts attending Carol Morgan, and wants to chat up their daughters. they do not have any objections to advances like the metro; they just won't ride it, and have to endure the indignity of having some ghetto dude belching salami gas beside them.
there are brilliant Dominicans out there, every bit as sharp as any gringo here. however, the numbers are very small, and they intend to keep it that way.

Forget it dude, the gringos here don't have a clue.
