18 inches ? lol

Skipping line is unrelated to personal space, it is just the lack of education/discipline. Cuba is the perfect example, they have mastered the art of standing in line even though they stand close to you.

in Cuba they have much practise and standing in line, and much practise at being abused if they step out of line( pun intended)

It is a cultural thing and not just in the DR, but the rest of the world. In Asia, they will push you along if you do not move fast enough like boarding a train or bus. As far as reaching across you and not asking is done by idiots that had no proper upbringing. Most law abiding Dominicans are very respectful. The trailer trash (not just poor people) are the ones that act that way.

I agree that it is cultural. People from the USA are used to more "personal" space. Here and in Asian countries, not so much. In Sri Lanka, I noticed they had no concept of a "queue" at all and simply rushed to whatever was being done "en masse".

Yup the strangest thing I found was I had to sit on a guys lap with my arm around him bc of 9 people in the carro publico. No way in NA would it be ok for a guy to sit on another dudes lap, lol. (Well except for gay places of course).

I can't stand the lack of personal space/privacy here but I think I am getting more used to it. The ATM thing bothers me the most.

Ok, here comes the obvious; did you enjoy the ride?

Reminder of how much poorer Japan is compared to the DR. No wonder they are so skinny.

LOL! That is hilarious! God forbid someone has a full bladder (as the men push and heave on their sides) or is nauseous, packed in there win no room to breathe!

I say the reason they are on your ass on lines is they are trying to find a break to get in front of you. I have boarded flights that contained majority dominican passengers hundreds of times. If they see daylight they will bolt for it. Some guy from row 28 is always pushing his way through business class, without even a "con permiso". On nearly every flight.

At ATMs, I purposely stand far back so as not to have the person using it think I can see their PIN. 40% of the time, another dominican runs up and uses the machine before me. Not because only 40% will do that, but rather only 40% of the time is there another nearby that needs an ATM!!!

Their country. Their rules. Doesn't bother me at all so long as they don't step on my feet or smell like sh*t.

The concept of personal space here is very narrow. Same thing with privacy.

The other day my neighbor was helping me open a gate, then we found my electricity bill on the floor. He just picked it up and opened it to see how much it was. He literally grabbed it before I could reach it.

Something I hate is that if you take a memory card to an internet place to get a file printed, some people think it's okay to go through everything, and even save it and keep it on their computer.

yeh i lov it when your in some 3 world country and the b.o. is coming at u from front and rear...of course women try to douse themself w/toilet water that i probably paid for...i have figured out that smell is from the clothes....sleeping in them...

Can someone decipher the coded message for me please?

I swear, why are HS still open?

To the OP,

Agree, in the DR privacy and space aren't proportional to each other.

Just another Barcelo induced rant, many here like him for some reason!
He grows on you after a while, pure entertainment.

Why would any one lampoon him/her is startling to say the least but to each their own. Dind't mean to deraile the thread, my apologies and thanks for responding.

It's something cultural

Collectivist cultures vs. individualist cultures and those in between

They have done psych studies on this issue. It's all about your "personal space" and where you are from as to how you will react. A lot of the latin speaking countries usually have a much smaller "personal space" whereas places such as the US, Canada and Britain require more space around them to feel comfortable. It gets interesting at parties where there is a mixed group standing around and talking. You can watch who is from where as you see the latinos moving forward to get closer and the non-latinos moving backwards to enlarge the space to remain comfortable all while in conversation!
