I was about to start my own small business selling merchandise from value manufacturers in the U.S. i.e. vizio or blu phones, but my Dominican friend told me the customs house in Santo Domingo is holding all electronics, even if they're under $200. Has anyone heard about this, is it true? I tend to not believe everything the locals tell me here.

my only evidence would be the fact that the ipod nano costs $313 here in the DR and $149 on Amazon. Gotta believe that is customs

the under $200 exemption is only for one package.. that is the contents of ONE package adding up to $200,, It would not work say, for a container of items all valued under $200.,,, if that is what you might have been thinking.

Let's say... I buy on Ebay a Fluke multimeter under $ Two Hundred Dollars and have it shipped to DR as a gift to my friend, how much he will end up paying between delivery from MIA / STI plus any custom charges???

Customs Gamble

JJ

Have it shipped with an invoice and hopefully they will accept it (and not take the DR value...).
The shipping costs to MIA will be included and the total will have to be under 200 USD.
Still a bit of a gamble...

I NEVER PAY any CUSTOMS CHARGES ON anything VALUE TOTAL OF PACKAGE under $200 us.
never!!!!!!
Freight is about $5 US using "EPS" shipping.
"OTHERS" may charge less, but you get what you pay for regarding shippers!!!
Been with "EPS" for 20 years!!!
I USE THEM SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH.

Bought a Posh Sharrk phone for $109-sat in customs because they needed a copy of the invoice-once invoice received, the phone was immediately released with EPS-no tax.

$130 24" HD monitor-through customs no problem-no tax-EPS.

$180 Acer computer-Submitted invoice-No tax-EPS

$109 Panasonic 5 phone set with answering machine-EPS-No tax.

I had a satellite signal meter shipped a few weeks ago. Came through customs with no problem. They may have even kept the invoice, cause it wasn't in the package when it arrived.

Okay. A bad rumor going around I guess. Maybe he didn't have an invoice with his shipment.

There was not bill include as it was a real donation from me.

Blu Barrels

The best experience so far, we have made with the blue barrels, especially for heavy items it's worthwhile.
Such a 55-gallon drum holds a lot of stuff and we always send more than 15 kgs, which then makes up for the cost of approx. 150 USD (door to door).
We never paid any taxes either.

I will be able to send more stuff some time soon, just sold my house and moving to FL by the end of this year... We are currently renting a small apartment.
Now we are working in what area we will be moving to.

I won't see another cold Winter here!
