Strange, Dr. Bob and Judy of AAA Sosua strenuous object to injecting ivermectin.

My ivermectin is in a yellow and blue bottle brand name: Extend 1% solution manufactured by Genfar. The instructions make frequent mention of cows and pigs, nothing about dogs.

The warning on the box clearly states that this product should not be administered intravenously or intramuscular. So it is possible that what I am using is different from what others have. When all else fails, read the instructions and/or talk to your Vet.

Cdn Gringo and Bermyboy you are talking about the same thing - both are the same drug. The reason they don't like injecting it is it can lead to infection. Orally is every bit as effective for ivermectin...tom

So you put the same amount in thier water or food as you would inject it ? I usually just inject 1 cc.

The correct dosage is calculated by using the weight of the animal being dosed. Some breeds/individual dogs do not react well to Ivermectin. I believe this is a genetic condition but since you are already using it on your dogs, we'll assume that they are not affected by this condition.

When using a 1% solution even after you dilute it for use, your pet is getting much more of the drug than the minimum necessary to deal with heartworm/parasites. As with all drugs it is important to use the least amount possible to achieve the desired effect. The problem is that it becomes very difficult to measure smaller dosages with readily available syringes so the formula below will work and as long as you use a syringe that allows to you measure fractions of a cc/ml you will be ok.

I have only ever used Invermectin on dogs so my advice is limited to dogs only.

There are several methods of establishing dosage. Here is one that is easy to remember:

Multiply the dog's weight by 2 then divide by 100.

Eg. A 70 lb dog x 2 = 140 lbs divided by 100 = 1.4 cc or ml of Ivermectin. 1 cc = 1 ml. Some syringes are scaled using cc some by ml.

I add this to a ball of bread so that the ivermectin is soaked up and held and feed it to my dogs at meal time with their regular food. I gather ivermectin doesn't taste very good on its own.

Always talk to a vet before using any drug just to make sure it will be effective and you are administering it properly.

You're all confusing me between ticks/fleas and parasites/heartworm. Are you using the same products for both?? We use Frontline for tick/flea and Heartgard for heartworm.

???????

We use Vermectin which we get at the Farm store on the El Choco road. Dr. Bob has said 1 cc per 50 lbs. You don't dilute it.
It gets added to their food. We were doing it two times per month but were told once per month is fine. We haven't had any
ticks.

AE,

Ivermectin is a treatment and preventative measure for ticks/fleas/heartworm. It is much much cheaper than frontline, heartgauard and the assorted collars, drops, pills that are also good treatments. Ivermectin takes a bit more more work than a pill or a drop but the cost savings more than make up for the inconvenience. Ivermectin is readily available and a 50ml bottle with syringe (depending on the number of dogs/dosages will last a long time - let's say a year) costs $RD300 or less.

I personally use ivermectin at least once a month, and attach a flea/tick collar to each dog. Neither the collar nor the Ivermectin will prevent fleas/ticks from getting on your pets, but will kill them and effectively interrupt the lifecycle if administered properly.

I'm not a vet and for a serious infestation its always prudent to seek advice from a professional. However, for monthly prevention and ongoing treatment of fleas/ticks and heartworm, Ivermectin seems to be a commonly and routinely used medication, that is easy to use, is stored in the refrigerator, is effective and is really cheap when compared to the cost of drops.

Some dogs and some breeds may be intolerant of ivermectin. Read up on the internet and then talk a vet. They will tell you the best way to ensure your pets can use ivermectin.

We haven't had any ticks.

You're not looking hard enough especially this year. :)

Usually really small, black and not engorged with blood. Slow, careful and persistent running of the fingers all over the body will turn up one or two. Any bump (smaller than a pimple) one feels should be inspected further. Where the legs join the torso (armpits), in the ears, groin, muzzle are good places to pay particular attention to. I find them everywhere though. Rarely a day goes by when I find none. If they bite a treated pet pet, then they will die and you should be able to find some dead ones near where your pet sleeps. Much larger than fleas, but still pretty small and quite flat unless they have had a meal then they are much larger and very round. They only die if they bite your pet. If they crawl off your pet in the house then they can exist for quite a while until they find your comfy chair or another pet.

If you are indeed tick free, tell me where you live, I'm moving in.

i gotta eat my hat. second time this year i see multitude of ticks on our dogs, they appeared seemingly overnight. rotties got washed, treated, the patio sprayed.
but this time i have found few ticks inside the house. no bueno. i clean the floors with disinfectant daily, where the fcuk is this crap coming from?

tick invasions coincided with the fact that we just put a roof over the parking space and there was considerable amount of digging and moving the soil.

Yup. Ticks on Mom CB's new Yorkie pup, but none on the other dogs...yet.

I did notice yesterday that La Sirena in La Vega now has several brands of anti- flea and tick medications in the pet department, no prescription necessary. Are they any good? That's a different story...

I have 3 dogs - a rotty, Great dane and a street dog that we took in. I swear by front line - every two months. Only once have I ever had a tick on one and that was due to me forgetting to use frontline by a few weeks. Seriously the best product - I agree a little pricey but well worth it.

DR has ticks, fleas and other pests. You should be giving your dog a flea and tick pill and heart worm pill, monthly.

Fleas, ticks, mosquitos, which could carry heart worm disease and other pests. Anyone with a dog in the DR, who cares about their pet, should be giving them a heart worm pill and flea and tick pill monthly along with a vet check up every 6 months. Too many things that can have a negative effect on dogs in the DR. Including those who will try to poison strays.

Here is what I use. No messy liquids. Don't have to do anything on a monthly basis. Cheap when divided by 8 (months)

For internal parasites I still add Ivemectin to a bowl of food once a month. A bottle is about 300 pesos and lasts a long time. Available from agri stores in the DR or your Vet.
