Those who are not "Equipped To Teach" can STILL give their children the most important gift a parent can give a child,..."Their time"!!!!
When is the last time you saw a dominican parent "Playing" with their children????????????????
Granted, most "dominican fathers" are at the "Colmadon" drinking, playing dominos, and looking for their next "conquest", and the "Baby Mami's" are at the salon, or the "Colmadon" waiting to be "Conquered", WHILE "Mami", really the grandmother, is busy cooking, washing , cleaning, and is too tired to "Play"!!!!!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Now let's see how some DR1ers can somehow blame THAT on the tourists, and expats????????

nothing to blame on any foreign Forces.
it's homemad DR,
it is typical DR,
it is a deep rooted part of the Culture.

my two cents worth is that the easiest way for a parent to meaningfully interact with a young child is to read to him or her, and to help the child to learn to read. the DR is not a reading culture. next time you go into the home of a person from the rank and file, and you see a book, let me know. if parents have never learnt the value of reading, either for recreation or for personal development, there is virtually no likelihood that the kids will grow up enjoying reading.

reading is a very important part of the all, no doubt from my side,
but here the deficits start on even well minor thingies.
a basic to raise a child, My Way,
starts to interatc with your child.
if you(parent) can not read/write, as it is the cas with so many, henfce the leak to read any kinda book to your child,
then at least you have to interact with your child, take it with you(not talking about a saturday afternoon at da Carwash), take your time to teach how to ride on da bicycle, build some sandcastles when on da beach instead of killing just some bottles of Rum with the kiddies hanging around somewhere near or farby.
sure the DR is not a reading culture,
because as fact, despiteall the glowing Pichardo statistics, a high number of todays parents is not capable to read anything, and less to read and understand the meaning of a children's stories book or such.
but such fact would not hinder to Interact with your child, to spend important time with him/her.
my wife could not read nor write at all when we met.
we started that learning process and she til today gives her best.
she is sure not made to become a public reader/writer, but she learns by the own abilities the best she can.
BUT,
she sure would not be living with me and our daughter under the same roof todays, if she would spend her days watching Telenovelas while the girlie has to watch some mu?equitos on the otha TV.
you can spend daily quality time with your children and teach them valuables even if you yourself do not know how to read Ernesto Guevara's from Paco Ignacio Taibo( i just mention tha one 'cause it is right now in my eyeview on the shelf.
i own it since years and did never read it(i read many books about the lil biach, but that one i bought in a bookstore many years ago and never opened the plastic sealed cover, it is still sealed).
on the otha hand,
there are hundreds of millions of first world parents, fluent in reading and writing their own mother's language,
and those fidiots are still incapable to teach their children a thing.
hence those wonderworlds show on daily bases some kinda news like "an other school shootout/an otha 100 girlies raped/an other azzhole converted to Islam and joined forces with ISIS etc etc etc".
honestly,
looking on the way kiddies grow up in the mayor cities in public schools in my own homecountry todays,
i see the telenovelas watching careless DR-Mommies as a improvement/the less dangerous variation of species to humanity.
it is all going steeply downhill,
and sure smartphones, smart TV's and "social" media do not help for any bettering of the "this is the end" song.

My older brother and I were supposed to take turns babysitting my little brother until mom got home from work. He never showed up when it was his turn. As we were not allowed to watch TV when my parents weren't home, I would read the Encyclopedia Britannica with my little brother , starting with A and working our way up through the alphabet, then when our parents got home we would try to show them that we knew more than them. When my own children were growing up, computer games, Nintendo...etc were available and I think it was a change for the worse. The last two generations have been over-exposed to entertainment and thus hve little imagination - books bore them.

sad but correct.
my babygirl is all smiles when i allow her 15 minutes of WIFI time here at home, so she can download a newer version of "Tom ama Angela", on her Smartphone.
yes, bad daddy,
as my babygirlie is really still a baby,
she is 4 1/2 years old/young.
i purchased myself my first in my life smartphone, and for the darn need to assist me on my JOB,
last summer, 2014, by the age of 50!!!!
i was defensive on my own case as long as i could, but work showed/forced me to take advantage of the "technologie" where it pleases me.
as for the girlie, well, a few months ago i would have named you NUTS to tell me i would get a smartphone for my Baby Girl.
but once i had mine, i saw her interest in it and the way she learned what shyt to do with it, while sitting on Daddy's knees in da office.
i still do not like it at all that she has one now,
but on the otha side have to admit, that i am well proud when she downloads a own searched for new game feature herself,
honestly, 2 years ago i could not have done that shyt myself.
the winds of change i guess.
