How many businesses have closed in Los Charimicos over the last ten years?

I know for a fact several have opened and prospered around Charamicos in the
last ten years solely on the sex tourist dollars coming in from abroad.

but back in 2001 there had been a similar crack down on prostitution and hopes of a new reputation as a family tourist destination. This seems like a pretty well established cycle.

I have watched governments in other third world countries try/ attempt
the same thing over the last 15 years. None of them have been successful.

I have a question/concern, if any one cares to offer some insight or feedback on. Most of the chatter in these forums is regarding closures, business curfews, and prostitution. What I do not understand, is why arent the authorities doing anything about the children that are out and about in Sosua day and night? If the powers that be care so much about the image of Sosua, then what are they doing about the children, that should be home and off the street? Some of those kids hang out in the streets later than adults. And yet its mostly women that are the focus and getting picked up by police..

It would make a whole lotta sense to do something about getting those kids off the street. IMO seeing those kids is more of a disgust and an eyesore than women out in the street.

The simple answer is kids on the street doesn't affect business, prostitution does. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Kids on the street in the DR are probably safer than kids on the streets in North American cities.

Rumba was shut down because they did not have a license to serve alcoholic beverages.

As far as when it might be re-opening? as of now I have no idea, I have not spoken to either Bobby, Freddy or Ruben.

There is no such thing as a license to serve alcoholic beverages. All you need is a Registerio de Mercantil...a business license. They were shut down cause they stayed open and served after midnight.

Dominican men are involved with these girls as much or more than the tourists. This is government pandering to certain interests....it's about lining pockets, it always is.

That is because prohibition never works. The kids on the street, the price of tea in China, etc are not the issue of the moment. The bad reputation of the DR, and in particular Sosua, because of prostitution is the topic. The fact that prohibition never works will not matter in how decisions are made nor will it factor into the thought process of those in charge of what is happening in the DR and in particular in Sosua.

But that's not what it is about....it's about money.

Wow "***monkey", you really like to question my posts.

I suggest you take caution before posting such an adamant (and foolish) assertion as: "There is NO SUCH THING as a license to serve alcoholic beverages".

I assure you, THERE MOST CERTAINLY IS!

Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the law here in the Dominican Republic

I'm going to save you the trouble . . .

There is NO SUCH THING as a license to serve alcoholic beverages. All you need is a Registerio de Mercantil...a business license

The LAW was even linked in this very thread in Post #294 by "ju10prd".

And here it is again:

http://www.senado.gob.do/senado/por...s Publicas/PROYDELEYEXPBEBIDASALCOHoLICAS.pdf

Here are the specific Chapters and Articles of the law that specifically state that yes, there IS SUCH A THING as a license to sell alcoholic beverages.

And here is the definition, within the very same law, as to what constitutes a "Centro de Expendio" de bebidas alcoh?licas:

CAPITULO I

DISPOSICIONES GENERALES

Art?culo 2.- Para la aplicaci?n e interpretaci?n de esta Ley, se consignan las siguientes definiciones:

2.2. Centro de expendio o suministro gratuito de bebidas alcoh?licas: Lugar donde se venden, expenden o suministran gratuitamente bebidas alcoh?licas en envases abiertos o cerrados, tales como, de manera enunciativa, y en modo alguno limitativa: colmados, colmadones, discotecas, supermercados, restaurantes, tiendas de licores (liquor store), car wash, tiendas de conveniencia (food shops), entre otros;

They were shut down cause they stayed open and served after midnight.

On Friday evening the attorney representing Rumba informed me that the order for "CLAUSURADO" by the "Secretar?a de Estado de Turismo" of the "Minesterio P?blico" referred to the specific violation of the law prohibiting the selling of alcoholic beverages without a license. Yes, the very one YOU claim doesn't exist.

On Monday morning I will be in their office, if I can obtain a copy of the actual order I'll post it in this thread.

Too bad there aren't any noise conditions attached to the licence to enforce compliance

Move out the ugly mean ones.

Yes maybe they will move out of Sosua, and for a while (maybe a year) business will be down but after a while maybe roving gangs of sweaty middle age men in white tank tops or an NBA jersey and basketball shorts with a towel thrown over their shoulders and smoking fat cigars pretending to be "gangster ballers" while staying in $45 a night flop houses and eating two orders of barbecue chicken for lunch & dinner will disappear too.
It isn't the chicas that destroyed the vibe of Sosua - it's the mongers from NY and Florida who move around in packs because they only feel like virile men when they can swap stories 'bout hittin' dat ass' with other middle age losers.
Maybe if the ugly low quality girls who cater to the these mongers are moved out and the classier hookers (is that a real thing) return to be with more sophisticated travelers (not so cheap), Sosua won't seem like a Detroit beach ghetto after word leaks out.

I'd like to clear up on what is happening in Sosua.

So, here's the thing. Tourist areas are excluded from the law and are allowed to sell until 3:30am. What the authorities are doing is illegal and will have to be challenged in court.

TOTALLY FALSE, "Tourist areas" are not excluded from ANYTHING and their is ABSOLUTELY NO LAW stating that they are allowed to serve alcohol until 3:30am..

The authorities did NOTHING illegal in the closing of the four mentioned businesses on Pedro Clisante, there is nothing to challenge in court.

This is a link that appears to be related recent police actions taking place in Sosua & Cabarete. But the report is undated.
http://www.hobotraveler.com/travel-journal/100-300-sosua-girls-affects-offshore-investments.html
Are you sure this is a recent report? If you click on the YT video in that webpage it appears to have been uploaded June 2011. I believe I saw that video before. So it appears that what you provided may be an old link on the circumstances that happened back when they rounded up women off the street. Back then the Politur jailhouse pass the end of Pedro Clisante was not completed yet. So if 100 to 300 girls got arrested last night, some must have went to the new jailhouse.

Personally I dont see 100 -300 girls in Sosua, getting locked up last night all at one time. Maybe during high season when businesses are thriving and hotels are full will you see 100 to 300 women on the street.. But not in the last few weeks. Does Andy the Hobo Traveler even come to Sosua anymore?

If my memory serves me correctly I have to agree that is an old, old report. I remember seeing those videos years ago.

The tourist demographic has definitely changed here in Sos?a in the last couple of years.

And this is SPECIFICALLY what is responsible for all that is happening here now.

Remember, I posted that those clowns (photographers) shooting the scantily clad "model" in front of La Roca was the tipping point, enough was enough for the folks from Santo Domingo.

WRONG. I do business with the Hard Rock Casino in PC. I ran it for awhile. We can serve liquor 24/7 in the Hotel, legally.
If you want to wager on this, I have a large bankroll......................
