Just to be clear tank was outside not inside ..if the tank was inside walls would of been blown out..I’ve seen what a 100lbs tank does to house with construction heaters when failure happens ...

Thanks for clearing that up. Then it's a lesson to those who have the tanks inside.

I have always had respect for propane. It is quite safe when all the safety measures are implemented.
That just does not happen in third world countries.
However a friend of mine and his son were overcome by propane in their ''new to them cabin cruiser''. Very sad situation.
Propane is heavier than air and is the silent killer. If you can smell propane anywhere, get the heck out. Ans shut off the tank.
There was an expat here in Luperon who was checking for a leak on his tank with matches..... not the brightest light in the room.! He was lucky on the non-explosion but not so fortunate on my lecture!!
Dish soap and water makes the best detection system.

Which is why my sailboats had CNG. It's not as effective as propane because it doesn't burn as hot, and requires a high-pressure tank for storage, but IS lighter than air.

By the way, propane has no odor. There is an additive to propane so that you can notice a leak. The odorant is almost always ethyl mercaptan.

Propane tanks do not explode unless they are subject to extreme heat, if their is an explosion it would be from leaking gas. You can look that up on the internet if you don't believe me. I'm a licensed plumber / gas fitter.

Which is why I keep asking "what happened?" Did an old tank fall off a moto? Was there ballistic damage? Was there dumb shenangians? Jerry-rigged connection?

more then likely leaking gas in an enclosed area and somehow was ignited. in Costambar I saw a tank on fire shooting flames a huge flame out of the top a long side 3 or 4 other tanks in an enclosed rm. if ever tanks were going to explode they would have. Fire dept. came and put the fire out.

Where did you all get the info about gas/propane explosion?

Looks like it was gasoline.

"Al ser cuestionado el padre de la víctima el señor Félix Ramón Baret, este dijo que el niño se encontraba rodando un tanque, color azul, el cual contenía en su interior residuos de una sustancia desconocida, y al rodarlo cerca de una basura en llamas se detonó una explosión y en estas circunstancia recibió las heridas que presenta que le provocó la muerte."

That's what I thought the guy in the video said, too(?). Plus, the tank didn't look like a propane tank. Metal looked too thin and the guy just picked it up with his fingers(?).

A leaking propane tank is very rare.
They are welded and them springing a leak just does not happen very often

Now a valve is a different matter all together.

Even with a leaking valve it would take a pretty significant fire in order for a propane tank to ever explode.

The tank in that video does not look like a propane tank. The steel is to thin and there appears to be no valve on that tank

Plus propane has a pretty high ignition temperature

The more likely scenario is that it probably was gasoline that caused the explosion.

Rolling a tank with flamable substance residual would create vapors which could easily ignite and explode.

The risk of a car explosion increases as the fuel level goes dow. A nearly empty fuel tank is far more dangerous that a full tank.

Vapors > liquid = explosion.

The report I heard was that the young boy was cutting a gas can in half to make a BBQ. The can had not been emptied/cleaned so there was still some gas inside which exploded while he was cutting.

Makes sense, as the cutting would create sparks which would easily ignite volatile fuel vapors.

Let this be a lesson, kiddies.
