A watch is those rectangular things we all carry. Its like 2 inches by 4 inches and 1/4 inch thick.

Take yours out now. Look in the upper right hand corner. Those number are a watch.

I never understood the need for such things.

There is no need, just a nice way for making sure that the wealth keeps its value with time (no pun intended.) Obviously, a major aspect of this is to not get the watch scratched or ruined in any way, but most importantly to not have the watch stolen from you.

Nice watches also look nice and creates a certain visual pleasure.

Agreed, a wise man never comes to an impoverished country flashing expensive jewelry and clothes, not unless he has a personal security detail. A lot of them do it to show off to these Dominican hoes, the trouble is that they attract them AND the criminal element as well.

Watxhes aremy jewelry. I have about six or seven , mainly citizen and seiko but I have a Tissot and abother mmid priced swiss watch. One of my citizens is a chronograph but all the other watches are simple and elegant. Price doesnt necessary depend on exterior. If somebody is satisfied with a timex that is fine, so is wearing a rolex. My son inhertied my dad's Omega, which is not fancy but worth about five times what my dad paid or it.

He should have. This is a developing country and it is well known (I was told this back in 2012 when planning to move here) not to wear expensive, flashy jewelry. He is just another dumb gringo that got relieved of his belongings because he apparently lacks street smarts and common sense. He was probably trying to show off to impress the local chicas, which is completely unnecessary as they can tell the difference between a foreigner and local and most foreigners are already perceived as being rich so wearing a costly watch is overkill.


The scum that robbed him are running a lucrative racket, as they will find no shortage of victims that don't know any better. If you are going to dress really flashy than either stay in the five star resorts and never leave, and if you do leave have an armed security detail with you, like the celebrities have, you'll be fine. There is just no excuse for not knowing this stuff most people here on DR1 have been aware of the dangers of wearing bling for years...

As a young man I had an expensive (to me) Swiss Movado chonograph watch. Well I spent one romantic night on Lake Oroville on the houseboat and while making a passionate interchange and pounding against the houseboat railing, I (or she) managed to knock the clasp open and now there is a nice Movado in the mud about 100' down off the Lime Saddle Marina...now what was that girl's name ?

I guess you have never been to Blue Mall in Santo Domingo. If you decide to visit, take a very close look at the watches that are on sale in many of the stores. Many of the watches are on display on the window, no need to enter the store.

People are buying them.

I personally think the theives didn’t know how valuable the watch is, rather that its a nice watch that could fetch them a nice price.

I think most people know that a Rolex is a luxury brand, but the more exclusive brands aren’t as well known outside their niche target.

Its the samething with cars. Every Dominican know what a Mercedes Benz is, but most don’t know what a Maserati signifies beyond the typical “carrito bonito.” These cars pass by most people and they simply don’t know how much they truly cost. They its expensive, but not the degree of expensive.

Most, if not all swiss made watches, have a serial number..... even a cheap-ish Tissot, never mind a 100k$ + watch......
So that particular watch will spend all its time in a private collection w/o seeing daylight again........ or, worst case, it will be on the wrist of fulano and never leave the dr again.
