Tell that to the guy that spent 23 days in confinement after ICE picked him up and decided that he was illegal. He had presented his Texas I.D., Social Security card and a wallet-sized birth certificate.

false!!!! that did not happen, complete fiction

In the DR we're "required" to carry our ID although most of the time a color photocopy seems to be sufficient. Not sure how that would work if they thought you might be Hatian ;)

In the US even if youhave all your ID on you sometimes is not enough ;)

Had a kid bump against me three times in La Sirena. The third time i stepped back and came down hard on his foot. He apologized and disappeared. I assume he was just starting out as a pick pocket, but he didn't get mine!

There is more to the story PB. There were reasons DHS doubted the authenticity of his documents.

His mother got a VISITOR visa for him as a child that he used more than 50 times to cross the border, his mother had a fake ID, and she also falsified names on birth certificates with that fake ID. He was detained with other illegals. Those issues clouded his authenticity.

Actions have consequences.

I'm totally OK with close scrutiny on examination of documents presented by suspects. The "fake document" thing is a massive...and fraudulent...business. I'm sure you know that.

So there is much, much more to this story than the guy being a poor, innocent victim of The Man. This situation is unfortunate, certainly.

I applaud the DHS for being suspicious of fake documents and being thorough. If Border Agents weren't slammed with a virtual horde invasion at the border of historic numbers with the attendant confusion thereof, I suspect his situation could have been resolved more quickly.

I don't want to get too far off course from Sosua. Coyotes have been using legal residents for years to transport other illegals. Whole bunch of U.S Marines just got busted in SoCal for doing just that. Old trick. A legal in SoCal with completely legal documents and registration is driving several illegals dressed in beach wear. They report coming from beach, ICE and DHS arrest and detain these coyotes and illegals every single day.

In Sosua or any town here, if by 1 in 1000 chance a PD asks a gringo walking down the street for ID and you say "not with me" the only way he will take you into custody is if you take a swing at him and tell him you are a Minnasotta twins fan

All this may factor in but it would not have taken the authorities 23 days to ascertain that the documents were valid and let him go. They were making a point and penalizing the guy for not being white. Spin that however you like but we all know it's the truth.

What his mother may or may not have done when he was a minor is no reason for what happened to him. If he was involved in crime then by all means charge him. Since they have not...

Any new issues at the border falls directly on individual 1 and his policies, not the dude falsely detained. In longstanding American tradition I hope he sues and wins bigly! LOL

This is very similar to the roundups of Haitians in the DR, which I have witnessed many times with my own eyes. The authorities do what they want, blame the "illegals" even when they have their papers and deport or detain them regardless. There have been numerous cases documented should anyone care to read for themselves.

I see, again. Deflect, avoid, evade, disparage the source. Terrible tactics

How about you rebut the answer....not that you have a valid argument ;)

I see there's no point in discussing matter with you so I'll just continue to correct your errors. Your response isn't really necessary :disappoin:cheeky::bunny::bunny:

Thing is Cortez I believe the cruise ship pulls into port around 8 AM and departs 4 PM or so.

...well ...could have been a good idea, except for the timing of the boats...and the fact that many of those tourists wouldnt make it back in the morning............

all countries have the right and responsibility to protect their sovereignty and border. The D.R like the U.S gets a bad rap for doing what they are supposed to do. Enforcing laws enacted by we the people. Getting back to Sosua, I would rather the PD round up illegals instead of the working chicas. Why? The chicas are not breaking the law.

And you don't think that is the case ? They did it once and the snow bird tourism was impacted.
Just as one large resort in Punta Cana closed due to bad publicity over the attacks and deaths of tourists the effects can be devastating for the employees and dependent businesses and suppliers.

But never fear the new campaign “Rescatemos Nuestro Paraíso" is now underway in Sosua.

Typical DR news report - lists everyone in attendance at the press conference but not a word about the substance of the initiative other than being yet another attempt to rescue Sosua as a family tourist destination.

Pulling teeth is easier here than finding out what is going on.

When you don't have a real plan try to sell the bonafides of those who are planning

Local leader suggesting "family destination" implies some kind of Disney-esque vibe .

But not wanting Sosua to be an international sex tourist destination is not the same as advocating for Disney. They just want the old reputation buried.

It would be nice if the press would go the extra mile and report how this is to be accomplished under this new plan or amended plan or old plan with a new name. The particular news article referenced is useless in this regard and that was my sole point. If Sosua wishes to be family oriented, I don't care much. I'm just here doing my thing, minding my own business and staying away from trouble whenever I can. What happens in downtown Sosua after 7 pm isn't a current concern of mine.
