We have a rental that was booked full time for 10 years going back 20. They stopped coming due to that great change in Sosua when it became a whore monger town. Had some that rented just to have whore parties and ruin the place in one night.

We don't rent anymore. We save by NOT renting.

I also wouldn't compare taking a girlfriend to a cabana on the same level as chasing prostitutes. I think it is much worse for a married man to be having sex with a girlfriend on the side than it is for a single man chasing prostitutes in a country where prostitution is legal.

….that's just splitting hairs.....Almost every Dominican man I know does both...….

Really? Splitting hairs? Seriously?
One is clearly worse than the other.
Whatever happened to integrity?

Read thru the latest posts and there were posters who claimed they have no skin in the game. The only posters who have no skin in the game are tourists. If you live ANYWHERE in the D.R. you have skin in the game.

The Dominican Authorities are clearly doing illegal actions by targeting these business owners as prostitution is legal. Once any authority in any government gets used to moving with impunity it's would be only a matter of time before they target their next group with their illegal actions.

Pimping is not legal, and for years Dominican authorities claim any business who makes money because of prostitutes is illegal.

Once you cross that path it turns in to slippery slope.

"Dominican authorities claim any business who makes money because of prostitutes is illegal." While this would make a business like Passions fair game by the authorities.

You cannot define night-clubs like Dlatins, Classicos, Merengue Bar etc.. in the same boat. Dominican authorities can claim what they want. What is the actual letter of the law is another reality.

Common sense and logic dictate that If the authorities do get away with these clearly illegal acts it will only embolden them when they go after their next targets.

I talked to the mother of a hooker three years ago and she spoke of how she was a hooker when she was young. So that was more than 15 years ago, more like 30 or 35.

You may be correct about the "slippery slope," but I doubt the authorities care, and they don't pay much attention to gringos they think are disrespecting their country, whether you think you are or not.

I also suspect they would disagree with what you consider "illegal" as well as what they consider "the letter of the law." But then again, most countries are constantly re-defining what "the letter of the law" means, not just the DR. If they don't like what you're doing, they will harass you out of business.

This ain't Kansas, Bubba...

You can spin it as much as you want but fact of the matter is that prostitution is not illegal. These are not brothels that the government are going after but legitimate legal business. Countries are constantly re-defining what "the letter of the law" means but their are specific process in place to do so. In this scenario there is no such process taking place. Some higher up in the government issued a decree and so you have the current scenario.

If they don't like what you're doing, they will harass you out of business does seem like normal behaviour that is accepted and tolerated when it clearly should not be. Why any foreigner would CHOOSE to live in a system like this is beyond comprehension. These actions will not draw foreigners with real wealth to the country whether to invest or live. The more money you have the more important the rule of law is to you.

Jamaica which is a much more violent place than the D.R. does have a court system in place that is based on the judiciary of the United Kingdom. If you are on the right side of the law you can expect the court to rule in your favour. I bring this point up as my commercial properties there are protected if the Jamaican authorities would decide to take similar illegal actions against any of my properties.

Then there are plenty "beyond comprehension."

It is what it is.

But I do understand you don't like it.

That's the way the DR has always been. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I too do not see it changing in the foreseeable future. I pity those who don't do their due diligence before leaving the sanctuary of their first world countries and taking the plunge to move in the D.R. One defining attribute of being a third world country is when the government chooses to ignore the rule of law. I hope future hopefuls that want to make the move to the D.R. keep this in mind but I doubt it.

Time to close all the hotels in town and move them to the new improved red light district as well.

When I first came to the DR in 1970, the country was full of whore bars and small bars with 5-6 available girls.

Santo Domingo had dozens upon dozens of larger bars with nightly shows and 100+ girls in every one.

Everybody knew what they were there for, and nobody complained about what went on in them. As the man said, nobody cares what you do behind closed doors.

Sosua wasn't even a thing back then. Just another little town visited by tourists occasionally and a few expat residents.

The internet is what changed it all.

What is illegal about closing bar only locations?

Riddle me this: What is illegal, based upon actual Dominican law, about closing down a bar only location in an area where the only places allowed to serve alcohol are restaurants?

What is illegal about not permitting a disco, with loud music, in any area where only restaurants are allowed?
