CLOSED: Classicos and Merengue bar downtown Sosua.
September 14, 2019
Facebook, twitter, the message boards and WhatsApp all started blowing up around 7pm last night. This is the biggest news to hit town since Rumbas closed.

Classicos and Merengue bar both shut their doors, permanently.

Over one year ago the city of Sosua passed a resolution mandating that the downtown night clubs either change their business models or relocate out of the downtown district. The business owners were provided a grace period of twelve months to conform. The ordinance was fully enacted this week and the days of downtown Sosua essentially operating as one gigantic brothel seem to be over.

The shift from sex tourism to a family friendly beach town isn’t going to happen overnight but this is definitely a step in the right direction. Don’t worry boys, the girls will still be here just head down to the casino after 11pm or dial up your “date” on a social app.

Take a stroll through Sosua Ocean Village, Playa Laguna, Hispaniola, Sea Horse, Perla Marina and Casa Linda. The number of families, retirees and expats living in those communities is rising exponentially. The downtown district needed to be cleaned up and it needs to be accessible to everyone, not just the spandex hunters.

The future of Sosua is tied to residential real estate growth, commercial development and tourism. Not prostitution. The long term effects of cleaning up the downtown district and changing Sosua’s reputation will benefit everyone. #rescatemosnuestroparaiso

It is amazing that the fight is over a kilometer or so of a road that only has bars on it. I certainly hope there is a plan with a new influx of business to fill up the space. What else is on that part of the road? A few restaurants and a couple of clothing stores? What is coming in?

As an advocate of small business, what would you propose?

Yes it has always been quite something that such a small part of Sosua has had such a focus. Time will tell what happens next. I certainly have no idea. The whore mongers will say everyone in Sosua will now be forced to starve. And what will "Mr. T" say about this?

1. I have never owned a pair of Crocs, but I have always had a fine pair of chancletas within reach my entire lifetime.
2. I must admit to a sleeveless shirt period of my life, but that was back in the early 1980's. Oh, what a time it was.
3. Swim trunks are never to be worn in public, and are optional at my residential properties.
4. Aside from my university days, I have never been a huge partaker in beers, stouts, or ales. My preference leans towards fine wines, rums, and the occasional Vesper Martini for special events.

extra dirty vodka martini is my fav, Margot in Sosua is one of the few places in town that knows how to make one. im there almost every week, drop me a line

If you are looking for companionship, you will find companionship...no matter what they do.

It's great how the government is going to shut down those small local businesses so that large foreign companies can make their move in.

And you know they are offering a tidy entrance fee and it is in cash.

This is what I have been saying. This administration works on the big things but ignores the smaller basics.

It's going to be quite a shock for these high end travellers when they leave the hotel only to find a empty rundown town with nothing to do.

In desperation they may have to drive to Cabarete?

It's not that the sidewalks are empty...it is the sidewalks in many places are a hazard to walk on. It was not long ago that I sliced my leg open on a piece of rebar sticking out of a sidewalk. The infection was nasty. The town is run down...work on that first.

As bad as the sidewalks are, I think they are a covert economic driver. The more you drink, the easier it is to negotiate the sidewalks and, of course, the slow pace allows the ladies to chat and negotiate with you. Seriously, I agree Sosua needs some cleanup and rebranding. I hope they don’t sterilize it in the process. If I want to spend time in family oriented resort towns, there are hundreds of them in Florida. Sosua, Cabarete, Puerto Plata all have their own good and bad points but they all draw a diverse crowd. Hope it stays that way.

In all fairness though I think this is COUNTRY WIDE problem.
On the Samana Peninsula, you could be going 50 MPH, and all of a sudden you see a Huge " Plant" in the middle of the street wtf ? , its an open man hole cover with Palm Tree Branch to warn you.. Santo Domingo, you could be walking in the rain from your Cigar shop, and all of a sudden if you are not paying attention, the storm drain is Hole big enough to swallow you up with steel REBAR waiting to impale you on the way down .... Dominicans just don't seem to care about such dangers .
So I have a feeling that those picture of Gringas on Bicycles riding on a brand new cement sidewalk was from some Marketing Company and has nothing to do with Reality in the DR..
As many have already said , Its ELECTION time now ... the only time anything ever gets done ..

Some guys wont , Cant , ..they only know point and click and can barely do that , they only know Dancing at the CLUB ( classicos) ..sometimes even dance by themselves .. which I never understood .
I have a feeling those are the single men they are targeting...
call it what you will, I wont say it . but you know what it is .

Boy has your tune changed. Just a couple months ago you were accusing Frank of being a swindler and doing business in bad faith.
I'm sure he read your posts and knows what real friends you really are now!

I only met Frank one time but I have read his posts.
Accusing anyone of "being a swindler and doing business in bad faith" is totally out of his character.

Well go back and read his posts about Frank and his crooked lawyers and business practices

The old send em on a wild goose chase plan no longer works with savvy posters.

Is it possible that you maybe misread or misunderstood the posts?
Just saying before this goes too far.

I do recall one of the lawyers acting independently and in an irresponsible fashion.
Not too uncommon with the state of the practice of law in the DR.

Tme will tell if the closure hold up.

Bring in the lawyers and the lawsuits.

I only have legal experience in the US but the taking of property is serious.
In fact it is serious enough to require a valid reason.
The towns"image" and disliking perfectly legal activity due to personal views would not be much of a challenge in a US court.

Here, who knows.
Might come down to who has the deeper pockets or owns the judge.
If the other biz owners are smart it is time to stand together against the "clean up crew".

I have yet to read a logical reason to force the bars to move at their own expense.

I expect Illiana and the crew are looking high and low for anything that even sounds legal.
You got to know Classico's and Merengue bar are not going to just toss in the towel.
The bell rang and it is round one.

Doing their job managing and maintaining the city does not pay anything like moving in hotels.
Once the pay offs are done the present group will take the money and run leaving the fixing to the next bunch.

Starve?
Me and all of my whore monger weekend warrior buddies from NYC
are looking forward to it. We're all very optimistic it will finally make those
fat spandex wearing wilder beast more affordable by driving the prices
down....Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition :cheeky:

Totally, 100% incorrect.

Legal adult-oriented businesses are routinely zoned out of areas all over the Fruited Plain.

Use of "whore mongers" is far below your usual postings.
You have a horse in this race?
