A link to the article below was posted on a newspaper site I follow frequently, the point being that the worst cases have been reported being on the latitudes 30-50:

https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.0030151

Part of the original article, translated:

"In Wuhan, China (30 ° N), the epidemic began to erupt early in the year. An interesting coincidence, with the average temperature in Wuhan in January being four degrees Celsius and January being one of the warmest months of the year. Relative humidity in the interior of China is at its lowest during the winter months"

Of course, Italy has also an aging population, but it's also fully between those latitudes...

Santiago

I came back from the main Santiago Supermercado Nacional at about 7:45 am this morning, the traffic in the city was extremely light for that time of day.

The main Nacional and La Fuente (on opposite side of Santiago) had NO REGULAR LOAFS of BREAD.

The bakery at Nacional was fine with their selections (Bought a 10 pack of fresh pan de aqua rolls).

Counting myself and the wife, was only about 5 customers in Nacional (7-8 am time slot).

Give a man some bread and he eats for a day. Teach a man to bake bread and he eats whenever he wants. Bread machines are wonderful provided you have electricity.

You are being asked to stay home to avoid catching or spreading this virus. Bread is not a necessity because if it was you would have bought it before the lockdown began.

People, please consider respecting the efforts of the Govt to slow the spread of the virus in this country. Please stay home unless leaving your home is "absolutely necessary". If you don't we'll all be locked down for that much longer under increasingly restrictive measures.

We went to get essential items for a confined-to-home close friend (Also a senior).

The mention about the bread was collateral damage.
And "I" did buy extra loafs before lock down for my family.

Isn't that Seniors' Happy Hour----7-8am

If so I'll have to send my husband, who at 60 only just qualifies. I'm still a good few years from that category, although I do have an underlying condition, which would count in some European countries, not sure about here.

Supermercado Nacional has 2 entrances.

They had one closed off and the guard would manually let customers out.

Entry was restricted to the main entrance only between 7 and 8 am.
After 8 am I imagine they would then activate the 2nd entrance.

Good for you for helping out others. Good for you for gong early when there would be fewer people about. But you still shouldn't have needed to be out when the lockdown began. All of this should have been done by sometime yesterday. As of right now, we should all be in a good position for many days. The arrival of tomorrow should not bring with it the "necessity" to leave the house.

Going forward people will need to do a bit more planning. Combining shopping runs for various people into just one outing. Resisting the temptation to pop out for quart of ice cream to go with the pie the esposa baked. Everyone can justify everything to themselves quit easily. In the light of day, the failure to plan, or to prepare in advance or the unwillingness to endure a little bit of inconvenience is pretty easy to see.

For this reason I don't have a lot of faith in voluntary lockdowns. There is always someone who wants something or wishes to do something that really isn't "necessary" but they choose to do it anyway. Isolation will not achieve the desired results unless there is near complete compliance. When this effort fails or even more disruptive measures are needed some of need only look into the mirror for the reason why.

In actuality, 7 am was the best AND safest time to go.

Empty store, empty streets.

Sorry, not trying to pick on you but I think you missed the larger point.

7 am will probably be the best time to go tomorrow too and the day after that. If this lasts long enough, sooner or later all of us will need to go out. I just hope that most are willing to do all can to extend the amount of time between necessary excursions and to limit their contact with other people at home (no guest gatherings) and when they do venture out to do the necessary things from time to time.

Everyone who gets sick and hasn't been in their home for at least the three days prior to experiencing symptoms can be pretty sure they have spread the virus to at least two other people anyone of who could be someone for whom this virus is "not just the Flu". Everyone's actions and commitment to the effort to slow the spread of this virus now while the number of cases is still manageable matters, it matters a lot.

Why are people using the term "lockdown"? We are not in lockdown in the DR. We have been encouraged to socially isolate and close non-essential businesses and the borders are closed.

For the time being we are free to roam the country. Coronavirus doesn't survive on a sunny beach or in the campo or by a river. I'm planning on family picnics or taking a portable BBQ to some remote location for as long as we are free to do so. We have our bikes and I might even dust off my old canoe that I haven't used for years! Heck, I might even have a go at learning to kite surf!

If you want to know what "Lockdown" means, look at Italy and Spain.

I alluded to this yesterday and based on discussions I have had regrading my own upcoming reservations later this month at this resort and the on the ground information being provided to me by friends who have been staying at the resort since January, I feel comfortable raising this from an unsubstantiated rumor to a likely unfolding scenario.

At Lifestyles Cofresi, no new reservations are currently being accepted except those made for 90 days or more into the future. The number of guests on the property has dropped dramatically over the last week. The term ghost town was used. Guest have been asked to leave as quickly as they can. It has been suggested that remaining guests could in the near future receive notice to vacate the property within 48. Staffing levels are being reduced daily.

I have no information about operations at Lifestyles Cabarete.
