I will be in Saman? in June to fill in the gaps on my family history... hopefully. My grandparents passed away before I was born, so the history and knowledge of family has pretty much gone away with them. I just hope I am able to get in touch with the right people because the times that I have gone to DR I go to la capital.

Quaker Connection

I don't see that anyone has contacted the Quakers in Philadelphia about this but they would certainly be a useful source. At one time the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends was the largest slaveholder in the United States due to their practice of holding the papers of slaves/freedmen who came up to the North in order to prevent them being resold into slavery in the South. Quakers were the first organized religion to prohibit their members from being involved in slavery so that (even though this was discussed for 20 years!) by 1790, all Friends had to "be clear" of slavery.

Thanks, Hillbilly, for posting that information on the American Colonization Society. I looked it up in wiki and learn a lot that I did not know. My family had ancestors who were deeply involved in this movement at the time - both Josephine Sophia Griffing, my grandmother's grandmother, who founded the Freedman's Bureau, and William LLoyd Garrison. So I guess when I started marching with the Congress of Racial Equality back in 1962, it was some sort of genetic ancestral pull.

But since the Samana Black colonists came from Philadelphia, which was a heavily Quaker enclave, I would suggest that scholars contact the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Quakers are meticulous and diligent record keepers and will have all their records neatly recorded and preserved.

It should prove to be a treasure for genealogists..

You can PM me for specific contacts or I can pursue it further if there is a scholar who needs the link.

At this same time, there were freed slaves also taken to Haiti, to an island off the south coast called Ile A Vache.

Interesting thread. Thanks for reviving it.

You should watch the video LaLouve posted. Some of those people and some descendants of the those that arrived in Samana from Philadelphia are still there.

Also, you all have to understand the historical context......

The idea that Haiti would be left alone was not a foregone conclusion since it was the most profitable.colonial possession.

Boyer was afraid that the French or other European power would try to invade and take back possession....

One problem he saw was that the eastern part of the island was vulnerable to attack, especially through Samana....

He specifically wanted to 'raise the color' of the population of that area by planting unambiguosly black families who would help develop the
economy and also have a stake in thr defense of the area.

To this end he sought Black americans ....for very specific reasons and with very specific qualifications.

Due to the activities of Richard Allen and Forten, Boyer knew that he new setlers would be politically, culturally, and most importantly racially
conscious....and psychologically up.for the challenge he perceived would.be coming....(European attemtp to reconquer)....
...in this aspect, he was correct... the Samana Afro descendants are racially conscious, tend to be endogamous.

The specific requirements for settlers he sought were that the be literate, possess skills/education( smiths, carpenters, wrights, ....)
And in return they would receive fertile land to farm...

He specifically did not want lumpemproletariates........people with nothing to offer..

Boyer was engaging in nation building.....looking to develop.and protect the new nation.

In Samana visit the Churcha, the old wooden church. For sure you will be able to get contacts for people to talk to that are descendants of the American immigrants.

How many run away slaves in the 1820s were skilled and literate? Looking for people with dark skin and a good education to do subsistenance farming? Really?==============The specific requirements for settlers he sought were that the be literate, possess skills/education( smiths, carpenters, wrights, ....)
And in return they would receive fertile land to farm...

They were not run away slaves but free Blacks, and quite a few of them were literate with skills.

Almost all skilled labor in the South was done by slaves......as well as unskilled... .

Carpentry, brick making, ironsmithing, casting, tool-making cartwrights, tailoring, leatherworking, culinary, etc....

All thosee grand plantation style homes many of which still stand in the South ......and the original white house ?.....built by skilled and unskilled slave labor..

As for literacy, that is relatively easy to acquire once you were no longer in slave country and were able to be taught .... a basic
literacy anyway..

As far as skin color was concerned and farming,

Boyer was specifically looking to 'raise the color' on that side of the island.....the belief being the unambiguosly and consciously blacks would fight to the death against re-invasion and purported reinslavement by European powers...France specifically....

He didnt have much faith in the largely racially mixed eastern part of the island and their loyalties .....psychologically perceiving themselves to be
Spanish... as in white from Spain..although many were black and mixed.(somethings never change)...

The farming wasnt just subsistence .......as there export as someone has already mentioned......

Boyer was trying to build the economy of the eastern side and secure it against attack: nation building

According to the NGO's pushing for a One Island agenda, 'the blacker the better.'

This is just more agitprop designed to further their foreign-financed cause.

African American descendants do say they are full Dominican. Wouldn't be considered part of Dominican history ?
