service wise i would get it depends at what location you visit a specific branch of a super market chain.
i can't comment on the supers in your 'hood on the north, as i do not know them.
here in my 'hood, I am very happy with Super Pola.
very friendly staff, the butcher get's you form the back what you ask for, not just what is shown out in front.
the guys in the Isle where the milks are know that i buy at least one 12Pack each week, once i sweep around the super one of them asks if i need a 12'er and get's it from the storage room, as the ones on the shelf are mostly singles.
with very few exceptions, the numerous cashiers always have a friendly smile for me.
I started to use them at their opening, because Pola is located nearest to my home, just a few minutes up the road, and i drive by there several times per week on my work route also, so it started convenient.
formerly i did most shopping at the Supermercado Nacional in Punta Cana Village, also a good and friendly place for the shopping here.
each has some minor pro's and con's, none of the con's would be worth to me to buy some stuff at one and other things at the other place, Pola has everything for the daily needs.
shopping could not be easier or friendlier at any chain in Germany.
i prefer both, Pola and Nacional, over Iberia(a small one in Bavaro and a big one in Higuey).

People choose their supermarket by the Presence of AMET???
come on, what shyt is that?
are ya some criminals wanted in an other country or what?
in your direct neigbourhood/area, where you drive around every day, they know their cars and drivers.
they stop you once or twice per year, from there on they know your papers are correct for many months to come and do not hassle themselves to stop ya for nothing.
sounds like the PLAN does even has effects on the shopping of illegal Aliens.
Hey, Pichardo.
some new modification for da Frens at higher places:
make it mandatory to show a valid ID at a Supermarket Cashier, cedula or passport with entrance stamp.
no paper, no food, no drinkets, no veggies, no Pollo ...
lolol

I think both stores are much better at 8 a.m. than at 8 p.m. That said, La Sirena in POP or any of the biggies in Santiago are, IMHO, worth the extra drive in terms of better produce and frozen selections (particularly for imported meat). Santiago is also a fun day trip, too.

who would buy frozen stuff,
in a country where you get the things fresh?

it's because the frozen stuff is what you cannot get fresh. frozen section in la sirena is full of american products, from nathan's to chocolate eclairs. green peas (not the guandules kind) are not available fresh, same with brussels sprouts. and blackcurrants.

Mike,
I would explain that AMET has a Molestation Station just east of Playero in Sousa. They are obnoxious and annoy anyone traveling to/from the east is likely to encounter them. Irritating to say the least.

o.k., got it.
none of such is on my shopping list, so it doesn't make a difference.
someone mentioned the time when to shop,
like today, i like the mid afternoon hours, after 2PM.
the Pola here is then almost empty, most cashiers open, no lines and all the stuff stocked.
some kinda relaxation while most of their customers are at work or da ole Expats on their afternoon Nap.

Just did a Playero shop:
It's not just the hassle if AMET stop you but they stop others and block the road, motoconchos whizzing by, taxis pulling out and then stopping anywhere, guaguas disregard for any form of rules, blind people with two perfectly working eyes walking out in the street, ignorant drivers who don't care about the shade of the colour of the lights etc, etc.
And for our gentleman who says we need to get out excrement together, let's remember that you could assemble a fecal fantasy befitting a scatological theme park but that does not confer immunity from frustration in the face of idiocy.

For a few pesos more or less I can be in and out of Pola in 10 minutes without the hassle and if they don't have my favourite brand I'll get another and if the cauliflower ain't fresh I'll eat broccoli!
We are fortunate to have a choice really in this backwater.

i've been stopped there twice, once 4 years before I moved here and then last week. They are are always an annoyance somehow though. I feel like going to Playero and just give up and go to SP if I am not in the mood for a maybe hassle.

I go to Super Poopla for the toilets! Awesomeness!

Do they have the Dyson Air Blade hand dryer, like they do in La Sirena in POP? The most awesome way to dry your hands, and I'm not frequent user of the word "awesome"!

Although when I first saw the a Dominican using the Dyson Air Blade, he discovered that it was the messiest urinal ever invented!

I and my car are perfectly legal. Just getting stopped and having to show the paperwork and getting asked for money is a big enough pain in the ass. Come December, it doesn't matter how legal you are.

Late Nov/early Dec, the panhandling starts before Christmas.

Many, many outstretched hands on the highways & byways.
