Presidency requests Congress reinstate National State of Emergency

President Danilo Medina has sent a request for the National Congress to restore the National State of Emergency. The country had been under a state of emergency from 19 March to 30 June 2020. The lockdown and general containment of all in the Dominican Republic lead to a slowing in the pace of the spread of the disease.

The DR has had the know-how to control the virus, yet the very contested general elections got in the way, from the start of the disease in March (municipal elections were 15 March) to the presidential elections held on 5 July 2020. The reopening of the economy on 20 May, coupled with the free-for-all of the final weeks of the presidential and congressional elections, led to a significant increase in the pace of the spread of the disease. This is what the proposed rollback of the opening now seeks to correct.

Now that hotels in Punta Cana are opening will they be forced to shut again?

The curfew should not affect AI visitors - who may not be allowed out of the resort during their stay

Ushered in & out --- outside excursions are to be allowed - controlled tours.... no interaction w/ the public

I can't quite see how that would work. If you have tourists in hotels, then you need staff to come backwards and forwards to work, you need all the staff involved in running airports, you need all the transport companies and taxis and then all the companies that supply the hotels. And it's hard to do all of that if you have a curfew in place. What happens if a flight lands at 1am for example?

The barrio rumor mill has it going down tomorrow for a lockdown. Everybody is stocking up on food if they can afford it fearing more price increases in commodities like rice.

They need to get pretty firm about this if they hope to see results.

It's very obvious that the problem became rampant w/ no controls in place

What needs to be done will not be done and that is a 24 hour curfew for at least 2 weeks. It will be unpleasant but they will survive and the strain on the medical system will ease. Allowing people to come and go as they please until 5pm is idiotic.
