I'm laughing soooooo much today 😂😂😂 I hope today is the day everyone starts realizing Covid is a joke. "Don't let it dominate your lives, GET OUT THERE!!!"

I would not go as far as to say that the illness itself is a joke, but rather, what persons have chosen to turn it into is the true joke.
Illness, yes.
Killing the planet, and we are on the verge of the zombie apocalypse, no.
Scary thought for now......after Covid-19, what will be the NEXT big thing for television ratings and marketing purposes?
Here in the RD of course.

From today's El Caribe:
COVID-19 infections increase in people under 20 years of age

The number of minors infected with COVID-19 in the country every day is increasing. For this Monday, the Ministry of Public Health, through Epidemiological Bulletin # 200, reported that some 10,680 children under 20 years of age have positive results for the coronavirus.

This indicator is new to the bulletin, and was incorporated in the second change made by the governing body of the country's health system, in the report on COVID-19. This sector is within risk groups.

The first bulletin that shows this indicator is # 171, published on September 5. This was a month ago, and that day 8,462 infected children under 20 years of age were reported.

From September 5 to October 5, cases of COVID-19 in those under 20 years of age increased by 26%, that is, in one month about 2,218 young people were infected.

Until August 28, the bulletin indicated the age range of the infected people and this was over 28 years old.

Despite the curfew imposed by the government authorities, it is common to see videos on social networks about clandestine parties, where most of the attendees are young and in some cases teenagers.

That seems to be the problem all over the world. Young people think that because they are less likely to become seriously ill from the virus, they can enjoy a full social life which actually endangers the population as a whole. Young Dominicans are just the same, although young children can be excused because they know no better.

Looks like RD is following the same path as Europe did. young people get infected at the start then the hospital admissions increse and finally ITU fills up. I'm surprised it is happening so soon in the RD. Maybe it is because most of Europe had a total lockdown not just curfew, if the RD does not get on top of this new increase it will be back in curfew by Christmas.
Bang goes the DR tourist industry.

Yeah. very few countries have gone for elimination. It has always been about capping the spread to avoid overwhelming the countries health service which would be catastrophic. We will have to continue on the same bumpy path for a bit.
Exactly right and succinctly put.
I expect the bumpy path is here for our lifetimes.

I don't agree with the 'think they're less likely' part...... that sounds like a deliberate/conscious decision

The 20 something age group is wired differently.... they socialize more....
Not employed to the same degree..... more time on their hands..... mating/dating in mind more

Think colleges etc..... huge problems..... very different social parameters
Pre- puberty... pre adolescent is a different culture again

I agree WW.. Isn't it typical for us older folks to make the comment that today's youths think they're invincible?
That line of thinking has been around for ages.
Act now, think about consequences later?

I WAS invincible..... hjaha

made it this far.... and taking a LOT MORE care at this point

For the youth, it's a natural reaction.... not a deliberate , preconceived notion.

But are they a danger to society--- definitely!!!
I know many social circumstances in NoAmerica where households who have carousing 20 somethings
are banned from the grandparents and newborns...
As in, the parents are not allowed a visit

Thanksgiving coming...... there may be tests before the dinner:rolleyes:

From today's report - RD compares favorably in the world
=================================

Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the Dominican Republic at 196. You are less likely to die of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic than compared to if you were in Spain that lists at 695, Brazil at 690, the United States at 650, the United Kingdom at 624, Colombia 526, France 496, Argentina 474 and Canada at 252, all major source markets for Dominican tourism.

The Ministry of Public Health report indicates that 22% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (754 of 3,418 total available). 33% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are taken (183 of 553 beds). Health Minister Plutarco Arias says that the emphasis is on detecting the cases early on, so fewer persons now require hospitalization.

Do you think the government in the DR is unreporting covid cases, like this https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/22/americas/nicaragua-covid-19-ortega-intl/index.html
I think you mean under reporting.
We will never have a definitive answer.
Without extensive testing we have no accurate idea of what the infection rate might be. Its a guess.
I think this government is genuinely interested in reducing the epidemic spread and hopefully they see that being honest about the number of infections is in everybody's best interest.

It is good to check the graphs in other countries to compare how the pandemic is affecting countries differently. Spain shows the second wave as lockdown was lifted perfectly.

Anybody who is a tiny bit of a math person can see that the numbers don't remotely add up. Lets take the DR versus Canada. Canada tests 4 times as many people per million than the DR and yet the DR still has 2 times more cases per million. All the while the DR has less deaths per million. Not remotely possible to make sense of those numbers unless the DR has some secret cure for covid.

Most on Canada's covid victims were/are VERY OLD LONG TERM CARE PATIENTS. The DR doesn't really have any of these type of facilities to be breeding pits for the virus.

That is certainly a factor but as long as the DR has old people and lots of covid, it shouldn't make nearly that much of a difference.
