It depends on what you consider a decent price. Do you want a Chinese, Japanese, or Taiwanese pasola?

Cavo,
Thank you for your prompt reply ; I don't care about the brand as long as I can buy from a dealership with a
CC within 20 miles of Sosua.
Price ? Under $1,200 ?

There are plenty of dealerships within 20 miles of Sosua to choose from. The biggest ones are in Puerto Plata. You can find many Chinese brands for under $1200. I've seen some for $800. They are all pretty much of the same quality, the only difference is the styling and the size of the engines.

I would recommend Pappaterra. I recently purchased my moto there. In general they are a good honest store that stands by their product. For motos they have a good selection. (I found the big moto stores have a lot of bikes but a poor selection (ie 20 of the same bike).

$1,200 new is a fair price.
You may want to include a safety course on defensive driving. Very high death rate on these roads.

Since they just announced this yesterday, it's probably a little too early to ask about details.

Nobody knows the details just yet even for Dominicans, just that there will be this new requirement.

Just my 2 cents, but I would never allow a 17 year old to ride a motorized anything here. Way too dangerous.

He will not need safety course after his 1st survival of near death experience and he will have found god! Besides this is Sosua mostly drunkards establish a meting with god..common sense is the issue that can’t be taught :(

I've never been to Sosua. I was more concerned with an inexperienced driver with all those moto guys. It could turn out to be not so nice.
I rode a passola for years in South East Asia without any problems.
Rode one here for about 4 months when living way up in the campo
but outside of that little one horse town, I would not feel safe riding
one anywhere else on this island.

would never tell someone to buy any kind of moto for a 17 year old anywhere in the DR...if you must, buy very good health insurance first.....

I wasn't going to mention this, but what the heck. Back in the eighties, I used to live in a nice urbanization on Ave. España.

They had a hard-working 19 yr. old kid there that everyone was crazy about. Polite as could be and always good-humored and smiling.

All of us residents got together and bought him an old used Honda 50 to get to work. I was reluctant at first but got pressured into contributing since I used him often as well.

The first day he had it? Yep, you guessed it. Pulled out in front of a speeding jeepeta and that was all she wrote.
