Gerdau Metaldom announced on Sunday, 12 June 2022 the start of the dismantling of the manufacturing plant on the Malecón. The company announced that the demolition will take 21 months and is part of the metalworks sustainability plan.

“We are evaluating different project options, from an in-house development or one to be carried out by a third party. Sad to see the old monster go. That is a huge amount of $$ real estate. On the other hand, who remembers what a PITA the trucks were when it was open?

Didn't I see an article here once not long ago about what they intend to do with that land?

Yes, but basically Metaldom uis a monopoly. They control something like 95% of that DR sector. Almost all they make is from the DR since they export very little. It's rare to find a Dominican construction without using something from Metaldom regardless if it's residential, commercial or industrial.

$$$ if the plant is not profitable for the share holders it's going to get shuttered. That looks like what happened. Think Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Much of steel and metal production is outsourced. The big cheese is in specially treated metals

They've opened new plants. The Malecon location was pretty ancient.

Metaldom moved its operations to one of the Kilómetros exiting SD towards Bonao and I think another part in SDN close to the Ozama River.

Metaldom is a good money maker in the millions of dollars every year for the Vicini's and company.

No, it's private like most Dominican companies big and small. But even the most private has shares and the owners of those shares get to see their financisl statements and such.

The only thing I can imagine is that you don't know what a publicly traded company is. It trades on the NYSE

Not Metaldom, Gerdau does and has been traded since before the partnership with Metaldom.

Maybe they should build another branch in Haiti, I think in Haiti construction materials are too expensive.

It’s massive and right on the malecon. You can’t miss it. It was one of the first landmarks I identified back in the day.

Exports are very limited to Haiti and some was made to Cuba too and a few other places in the Caribbean. The DR is where most of its products are made and sold.
