I mentioned this before but it happened to my friends in Dajabon twice. The first time they had to pay something to enter illegally, even though it was free market day. The second time they got busted on the street and had to pay to get out. I forget how much it was but I think it was close to $100 total for the 2 people.

Just to add that this is one of the sweetest couples I have ever met. Married 11 years now and still act like newlyweds

I'm fed up with being called a liar by people who think they know everything here, as I was when I mentioned this before. You may say I'm a liar again, but I SAW this Dominican citizen locked up in a cell with the only other inhabitants being Haitians. In this particular case, she was released when the boss cop returned and pronounced her cedula legal.
No one called you a liar. Just a purveyor of fairy tales.

A few weeks ago while i was in a carro publico, we were discussing how there were no more police check points---- there used to be regular " weapons" check points.

The driver's phone rings, and it was another carro publico driver phoning to say there was a migration check point.
Well, our driver, and other road users, were letting every haitian walking on the road side know 🤨. The new hip word seems to be " los primos" for haitians.

Seems Dominican's disdain for LO is stronger than their " dislike" of haitians. 🤣🤣

When we get to the check point, they look on the car, and wave us on. Now, I really dont look dominican--- glaringly so---- but nobody asks me anything. Perhaps they are not as colour blind as some disillusioned fellow posters seem to think.

The funny thing is, my nearby village is extending the pavements.
Want to guess the nationality of the workers ?
Want to place a bet on their migratory status ?

There you go again, calling me a liar - just in coded terms. I'm not a moderator, but I'm surprised they allow abuse like this.

If you got out of your ivory tower overtipping 30% and dressing like a Wall Street would-be tycoon to show off how rich and upper-class you perceive yourself to be, and spent some time in the real world you would know how things really are for Dominicans and Haitians.

I think liar is a tad drastic. How about a fiction writer. So, you claim there are color police in Sosua. You claim to have two dark skin cedula carrying Dominican friends that have been picked up and detained overnight on multiple occasions. This is a tall tale!
It's happening not only in Sosua but all over the place. My Dominican friend has been locked up three times. The times I have proof of were in Sabaneta and Puerto Plata.

Not that it's really my concern but it does happen or at least was happening while I was living up there back in 2013. What you guys need to understand is it's not about the person, it's about the money. They know that most people, when given the option, would rather pay the 500 pesos than sleep on a hard damp floor in cramped cell that smells like an open air sewer. It's a business to them. Nothing more, nothing less.

You have a Dominican friend that has been locked up three times? Sir, May I suggest you associate with a better class of Dominicans. As we all know, we are all judged by the company we keep.

You have already reached your judgment on me. Others think of me differently, I believe. The person in question is a homeowner and mother of two excellent children. I know the family very well.

She was not locked up for doing anything wrong at all - just being taken for a Haitian. I think it's time to stop abusing me and my friend and start looking at yourself, what impression you are creating on others, and the reality of what is going on in the country where you live.

Thinks for the heads up Sir. I will now wear more sun screen as not to get arrested by the skin police. Have a lovely day.

One of my girlfriends back in the eighties was black. Blue black as a matter of fact, without a trace of Haitian ancestry for at least 3 generations.
She put up with a nonsense because of her color even back then.
I can only imagine what she must be going through these days.

I would think probably less, now. We had two teachers, both very dark, one Haitian with papers who is now a Dominican citizen. She says she has been asked for ID but never harassed by either police or immigration. My wife says she speaks better Spanish than most Dominicans. The other really black teacher has never been hassled, so she says. I think a lot of it must depend on where you are and whom you are with.

Absolutely! and how you are dressed and who you are traveling and/or associating with. If you are loitering around at night with a sports jersey and gold chains of course you are going to peak the interest of the P.D. If you are moving with purpose and look like a professional you are literally untouchable. Like it or not we are all profiled.
