I have a friend that has been in the Dominican Republic for about a month. He brought product in China and they in error shipped it to the Dominican Republic rather than the US. He has paid custom and shipping to get the product sent to the us. Now they have told him that he cant leave DR until is has Business Travel money to leave DR. They are telling him he needs 13,000 cash in his possession before he can leave to travel back to the us. This seems not right. The money is not owed to anyone. Have you ever heard of this government policy. Why would he need money to travel back to the US. Thanks

If the friend has only been in the DR for about a month the overstay fee would not be $13k pesos? Not sure what Business Travel money means.. but maybe the friend is not being clear on what the issue is. Agree something does not seem right.

Perhaps it might be worth asking:

1. What was the product.
2. How much, and what was the value of this product was brought 'inadvertently'.
3. What are the fees \ fines associated with bringing in said product.

Of course it is not right.
I do not know of any country that allows you to enter with more than 10,000 cash or equivalent.
If he showed up with 13,000 cash in possession...well he might wind up with more questions than answers.

I always deal with the Dominican Government through an advocate that has my interests in mind whenever possible.

Exactly AE, does the friend owe money? Has the friend been previously denied entry? Is the "friend" a US citizen/resident? Never heard of "Business Travel money" before. I asked my spouses family; they do a lot of import/export business. They have never heard of Business Travel money let alone it being a reason for departure denial.

Something traditional fishy here.
