The grandson of 30-year long dictator Trujillo, Luis José Ramfis Rafael Trujillo (alias Ramfis Trujillo) chose to retract himself from a legal suit he had presented to Esta Noche con Mariasela for statements indicating he had a criminal track record in the United States. Mariasela Alvarez used a segment of her next program to back up the statements and say the comments were made based on evidence.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) recently authorized the political party presented by Dominguez Trujillo, Partido de la Esperanza Democratica. Into the 2020 election, at last minute Dominguez Trujillo was impeded from running for President because he did not meet the requirements of renouncing his US citizenship nor living in the DR 10 years after the renouncing of the citizenship. In the months running up to the election in 2020, he was successful in fundraising in the United States...

She regretted that the political party of a person convicted of fraud and money laundering in the United States be authorized to receive public funds.”

Exactly what I said before.

This is nothing more than a money grab. He has zero possibly of winning, just like all of the other political parties that are in it for the money.
Giving money to political parties should be eliminated.

Agree 100%. Especially since he can’t even run in next election. Mr AE says he read he’ll get 30 million pesos a month???

Getting money for a political party means he has a greater ability to move forward and make it grow. Money always help make things smoother.

On the other hand, oh look, Farid Raful. A senator of the PRM.

Oh look, Diana Lora, daughter of Huchi Lora, who is a well known and vocalized anti-Trujillista.

The very reason I am voting for candidates from the following emerging (non traditional) parties:

- Rescate Democratico
- Opción Democrática
- AlianzaPais

All other parties represent the Quit Pro Quo putrefaction of the last 30 years.

Cheer!

Thank you for your truthful comments on the current state of politics in the DR. I’m not a Dominican. I’m outsider looking in and only stay in the DR part time. It’s obvious to me there is very little difference between Danilo and Luis. Danilo was in power longer and the corruption in his administration was greater. Give Luis enough time and the corruption in his administration will exceed the previous one. A return to the Trujillo political era by electing his grandson president would make the DR political situation worse.

At some point, the Haitian problem, the bad roads, corruption at all levels, lack of reliable water and electricity, and other infrastructure issues will result in the defeat of the current administration. I hope they are replaced by a more ethical party or a coalition, if necessary.

The DR has the potential to be a much better country and play a greater role for peace and prosperity in the Caribbean with ethical politicians leading it. The path to true democracy is not an easy one but it is a necessary one.

Perhaps you have some basis for your take on Luis. It's a big paint brush that you use as a "part-time outsider". Care to support your statements ?Dominican Republic, home of All Inclusive...even political opinions from tourists.

I’ll gladly respond to your request to support my statements. My knowledge of Dominican life and politics extends well beyond that of an AI tourist. Initially I used a residence in an AI resort as my base but moved on to long term stays in my friends houses. I made the effort to explore the North Coast, talk to people in many communities, and see first hand the level of poverty of many people. Through my Canadian expat friends, I became part of extended DR families and met and talked to DR officials, politicians, lawyers, etc. and gained what I think is a good general perspective on DR life and politics. I never passed up the opportunity to speak to expats from other countries to get their perspective on DR life. I’ve been to numerous weddings, funerals, and birthday celebrations. My friends married Dominicans, set up businesses, and donated their time and money to the communities they lived in. I witnessed the positive and negative aspects of their commitment to the DR. Hardly the background of an AI Tourist.

My brush is far from broad. It’s based on my observations and those of my friends. I don’t purport to have the high degree of political expertise of the Dominican Republic. What I do have is a keen interest in DR life and politics, and good observational skills I use to show me the impact of government inaction and corruption on the poor. I’ve had the opportunity to see the impact of the previous and current government on DR life, particularly on DR citizens in the campo.

President Abinader came to power promising change and an end to corrupt practises. His promise to bring the corrupt politicians to justice in the previous administration hasn’t gone well, They are basically untouchable. No fault of his but not unexpected. As his administration progresses, the litany of their corruption is posted daily on DR1 headline news and other DR media outlets. You don’t have to be a political scientist to realize that political corruption in the DR is not going away, regardless of who is in power, and political complacency aids and abets the corruption. All anyone can hope for is that new administrations become less corrupt as time progresses.

I’m certainly not naive enough to believe the DR government is the only corrupt government or the most corrupt. I’ve seen corruption first hand in my government. I’ve seen wasted government funds, nepotism, and coverup, but we have checks and balances to limit corruption in our government and they work for the most part.

An open mind, and an interest in the culture, combined with good observational skills can do a lot for anyone, regardless of where they live. The ability to not only look but see is a wonderful thing if we choose to exercise it.

Mariasela Alvarez caters to the political party at the helm, that's pretty obvious.

She interviewed sitting president, Luis "Paraisos" Abinader (Paraisos as in PandoraPapers) but she does not give airtime to the Metro employees who were fired as retaliation for organizing to demand better wages, benefits, etc.

And let me not get started on the Census workers who have not been paid by the Dominican Narco Government.

If the last 30 years have taught us anything, it is that all traditional political parties are deeply rotten. These parties represent the systemic cancer of corruption that keeps coming back. Traditional parties have handled more than US$400 billion (combined) yet the country lacks basic infrastructure, a cohesive long-term vision and looting of public coffers is more rampant by the day.

I urge fellow Dominicans to consider candidates from the following non-traditional parties:

Rescate Democratico (Dr. Roque Espaillat)

Join the Rescate Democratico movement here:

Opcion Democratica (Felipe Gavilán Marrero)

Alianza Pais (Dr. Guillermo Moreno)

Moreover, it is important we volunteer as Guardianes de la Democracia

Iniciativa para la defensa voluntaria del voto y la democracia en la República Dominicana

Thank you,
Rodrigo
