I am going with the border patrol. Everyone should be smart enough not to antagonize a uniformed officer and know how to deal and communicate with them. An entitled ex shoulder with a chip will lose every time. For that matter a nurse or a car salesmen with an attitude will lose as well.

Well in my case it was a DGM agent vs me, 3 DR soldiers, a colleague of the DGM agent and a bunch of Dominican bystanders.

In the end it got resolved in the office of the Boss of DGM at the border and she basically told the DGM agent to stop being a dik.

So until proven otherwise, I'll go with the US guy.

The American had one job to do and he decided it was best to argue instead. One of my special talents is to anger people, however it is very important to pick the right time and place to employ that skill.

LOL Speaking from experience?

Arguing about anything with the authorities when they are the ones with the gun and you have none is never a good idea, doesn’t matter how right you are and how wrong they are. In that moment they are right regardless…

How is it that the border official did not know that he was American until he produced his passport. Was he impersonating a Haitian? There is way more to this story that is not being told. When does one cross a border without passport in hand? Why would he be speaking to the border official in Creole? Fools come from every walk of life, sometimes even the military.

If he wasn't carrying his US passport and was speaking Creole, it's not surprising that a black man would be thought to be Haitian. He was stupid not to carry his passport, and being a US military veteran has nothing to do with it. Of course though, nothing justifies the use of violence by the official.

I am confused, how do we know the "American" was arguing to the point where hitting him was necessary? The story is confusing, details seem missing or not explained well. I agree that with any government agent, customs, border agents, etc...it is best to smile, do what they ask and move on. But I would think working at that border could bring out the "worst" in some. Regardless of what happened, was violence really necessary?

All of the parts that show how stupid the American acted have been skipped or glossed over. Sargent Slaughter reported that the border guy spoke poor Creole, but didn't mention an argument in Creole which obviously happened. Perhaps Sarge has Haitian documentation and wanted to enter with that. I hope a lesson was learned there. Violence rarely happens by accident. Unfortunately, sometimes violence needs just a bit of encouragement to occur.

Well, it looks like an "enlisted" man tried to throw his weight around and lost.
Why the quote marks on enlisted? Would you do the same if he was a retired commissioned officer?
