Investigative reporter Nuria Piera says that the 88 km section from Paraiso in Barahona to Pedernales road that for years has been under repair has not been finished. The unpaved sections convert a trip that was a 4.5-hour drive from Santo Domingo into a 6-hour drive. She also points out that it is a difficult drive for anyone not riding in a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Pedernales is where the Abinader government is funding the construction of several resort hotels to be operated by international chains to kickstart tourism in the area. Tourists are already arriving via cruise ships. Since the opening of the Cabo Rojo Port in January, five cruise ships have docked at that port so that tourists can enjoy the beaches and natural attractions.

Piera explains the drive gets difficult shortly after San Rafael, on the panoramic Barahona coastal road.

In November of last year we drove from Santo Domingo to Bahia de las Aguilas which is where the new resorts are being built. It's a few clicks before Pedernales. It was a extraordinary journey with little car traffic but a ton of lorries driving back and forth bringing construction materials to the region. For us, it was impossible to drive the distance in 1 day so we stayed for 1 night south of Barahona at the Casa del Mar Lodge. (We were the ONLY guests which felt weird.) To drive straight from Santo Domingo to Pedernales it would mean driving at dusk/night on the worst roads of the trip.

Luckily, we have a on-demand 4WD Suzuki which came handy trying to find the glamping site on the beach.

Getting there, there were large sections of the road that were being restored and improved especially south of Barahona. But a ton of potholes in between.

The remote beaches over on that tip of the island are fantastic. Well worth the hassle -

I am glad to see that Pedernales is the next big thing. Of course it will take time to develop the region, that does not happen over night, but the good news is that people will go there and Punta Cana and not the north coast.

Every aditional Day with this Location being hardly Reachable is a good Day for the Environment of Pedernales and the whole area.
This is the very last spot in the DR that is not overruned yet by Tourists and "weekend warriors". I highly recomend to everybody to spend a few days there before this will change.

I would go, but it's too hard to get to now. 6 hours just from Santo Trafficjam?
And add that to the time to get there from Cabarete.

We went several years ago and made it a four day trip. We decided that there was no reason to rush and try to do it in one day. We made several stops along the way, and on the way back we cut back to Lago Enriquillo where we saw some rhino iguanas and pink flamingos.
It is a fun trip if you are not in a hurry. The windmills nearby are enormous, nearly 300 feet tall.

Agree completely! I first drove to Bahia de las Aguilas/Pedernales right before Covid and have been back several times since due to the natural beauty. I wrote the post linked below a couple years ago when they first announced this development plan to bring in the tourist masses. I only pray the whole area doesn't end up as an over-developed shell of its former self walled-off from native Dominicans as PC seems to...

To All.

If you haven't had a chance to drive the coast road in the South and to Bahia de las Aguilas, do it... while there's still time. There's absolutely nothing like it and one day, this may all change

Does Pedernales have a regional or national airport?
No, only a small strip used by the mining company. They're building a new airport to service Pedernales outside Paraiso (which is a little unusual since that's still over an hour away). The only other major airport in the region that exists right now is the Maria Montez airport back in Barahona with very few, if any, scheduled commercial flights. Mostly small charters.

A well deserved "free trip." We looked online at the "hotel" options in Pedernales. 1-STAR was generous.

BTW, cell phones went dead once you are in proximity of the beach areas.

We might be one of the few humans on this board that actually was in Pedernales. I am assuming you got there. The place is an absolute dump...........And I am talking about Pedernales, not Bahia A................

I was there in 2019 but didn't really see the city. We crossed the border to Haiti. We did stay in a hotel there both going and coming. I remember it and would give it 3 stars, albeit negative stars.

Just kidding, it met our needs.

I was in Pedernales, about a mile from the Haitian border. We stayed in a relatively new motel a couple of blocks from the beach across the street from a ballfield. I can't recall the name, but the proprietor was Italian and spoke Spanish and English. Very quiet area. We'd walk a few blocks to the main drag (rt 44) at night to eat and never felt in danger. Interesting places to visit within a short drive, but the town itself was pretty slow.
