What's funny is them placing concrete road barricades in front of the landslide. That won't even slow it down but it will make it much harder for the excavator to clean the mud with concrete barricades buried under tons of mud.
This is just a saturated hillside that couldn't take anymore - like a quiet husband listening to incessant nagging from his wife and he finally had enough and just let go.

That was funny, but aimed primarily to keep the dimwits from driving off the road, I would venture a guess.

But, and this is a big butt, this was an area of hillside NOT cleared and left in its natural state that still slid into the main highway.

We had a lot of rain. Agreed it looks like a lot more slippin and slindin to come at that spot. Now back to beach erosion and cruisers.

CB. A series of gabion retaining walls in parallel starting at road level and working their way up the slope along with planting the area with fast growing vegetation with deep root structures would stabilize the unconsolidated soil but that’s not the DR way. Always reactive never proactive.

The plazas are to appease the cruise lines. That's where the money is.

I would like to know who came up with the information that this part would be the parking for the beach? The land is owned by the Paliza and Ilanas husbands family and has as far I know nothing to do with the beach renovation....

I started that rumor. It was my fault.... It seemed logical. Sorry to apply logic here, my mistake.

The cruise lines could care less about Sosua and will never actively attempt to send passengers there
Amber Cove has their own beach that is owned by Carnival so Carnival will push all of their passengers to their beach.
The cruise lines actively promote whatever excursions that add to their bottom line

Plus Sosua is over 1 hour drive one way on a good day from Amber Cove, a little less from the Puerto Plata terminal. It's to far for most cruise ship passengers
Thus Sosua will never see more than a handful of the cruise ship traffic.

Those plazas are being built to solely benefit other "un named" parties

Yes , they can certainly visit. and their money is certainly welcome, and yes they could be a target market for now .. but i dont see any heavy Revenue $ from Cruisers .
Just ask the Vendors on the beach at Amber cove beach how they are doing .. no so well. unless something has changed there recently . And that was also brand new construction , i was there before they even opened .. and then a fence wall was built to block them out completely
The Cruisers have to go out of their way to walk there , or swim up to the beach.. Unless something has changed..
The Banana boat and charter boat guys could make out well tho.

Yes, if he is from the family that owns the land, then this will get done, however horrible the beach might end up being. I saw in a rally during the elections campaigning for Ginette (I kept saying Gillette and getting side-eyed by the gf ) and then learnt that he was the PRM senator before Ginette. He also visited first during the recent flooding and announced relief measures and the visit by Luis

Whether or not it's doable will really depend how much time the ship is in the port. A landslide could cause you to miss the boat though.

The revenue I refer to is mainly the first definition of the word. Tax dollars to the govenment.

Some are saying the plazas on Sosua Beach will definitely see their type of revenue from some cruisers. I have no idea on that.

Hell, the plazas won't be done for years to to come, so that will be a while.

Imagine leaving your nice cabin or deck on a cruise ship where you have an unobstructed view of the ocean to take a 50-minute ride through diesel smoke on a pothole filled road to sit in a concrete Plaza on the edge of Charamicos?

Where is the charm in seeing just a peek of ocean from 100 yards away, while listening to cars honking horns at the Caribe Tours bus trying to back into the bus depot, or the screeching preacher through loud speakers from the Catholic church mixed with hundreds of poorly running Chinese motos. All the while sitting on a hemorrhoid-causing hard bench.

But maybe they will sell post cards depicting the older charming Sosua beach shacks. One without a ditch carved through it. The tourists might pay 400 pesos for one of those right?

Although not in Sosua, Outback Tours in Munoz, is full daily with cruisers going on buggie adventures. Most of the cruisers are anxious to get off the boat to visit the country and experience the culture. The tour guides will no doubt bring the tourists on a "plaza" tour to buy overpriced gifts, enjoy a cold coconut drink or eat an authentic Dominican meal to support the local economy. This has been the Turismo plan from the start. The plazas are certainly not being built for us locals to enjoy.

Thanks for pointing that out again. Yes, cruisers already do go to Sosua Beach in significant numbers.

There were many discussions, mentioned in passing and in detail in local news over the past years about the changes coming for Sosua. There were many like Danny who were told nothing will change on Sosua Beach. He is in Thaoland now (Sosua/Thailand hmmmm) Many naysayers about other issues as well. Sosua can never be a family destination.

The plazas were only one part of that dialogue I am sure cruise ships were in that plan as well as yet to be undiscoverd things and some that will never happen despite all the best laid plans. And so it goes.
