New Requirements for Gun Permit for Foreigners

In addition to all the other qualifications, foreigners face two additional requirements when applying
for a concealed carry permit that are not mentioned on the website.. They now ask now for a 'Buena Conducta" from your country of origin and a Interpol clearance.
The tricky thing about it is that they want ask for it in the beginning. The will accept your request for review and only after all other things are good to go, they will request this Document from the country of your origin even if you are here for more than 20 years.
So if you are in a hurry, submit this doc together with all the other required papers even if they are not asking for it in the beginning.

If you are here for 20 years and still don't have Dominican citizenship, then probably you were too lazy to get it so enjoy all additional paperwork that you could avoid if you were a citizen.

No that you mention it. I realize what it was that i ever dreamed of but never realized it; Dominican Citizenship LOL

Just to make sure; when you talk about dominican citizenship, you are not talking about having a cedula but being a full citizen with Dom. Passport. Because you can not get a gun permit without having a cedula, And still they ask for buena conducta from your country even after having a cedula for 20 years.

Legal residency with a No Vota cedula and naturalized citizenship with a cedula you can vote with are the options that allow gun ownership.

If I understand correctly, those with a legal residency cedula need the new reports and naturlized citizens do not need those reports, correct?

If you are not a Dominican citizen, you can be here 20 or 30 years with that residency and cedula you have, you are still a foreigner in terms of the law. And yes, I am a naturalized citizen with a Dominican passport so I know what I am talking about.

You never know what they decide to ask from foreigners tomorrow. If some 'smart' guy from the new Government decides that you need to provide your colonoscopy exam from your country of origin apostilled by Dominican consulate in that country, I won't be surprised.

Glenn, dont' get me started or others will mention a common theme.

The government does not care at all about how long people stay from tourist card countries even if they don't have legal residency.
Why would they ever ask anything of them or legal residents?

Because Government needs to show that they are taking some steps to improve gun control. They won't apply more requirements to Dominican citizens, people will complain too much, they already relaxed some requirements they initially applied a few years ago (like they don't want that declaracion jurada with every renewal, etc, they even discussing to make a renewal every two years now, not every year). But IF they want to show that they are doing something, they will apply more requirements to foreigners, it will look good in newspapers, like look we check every resident for his possible crimes in his home country every year, blah blah blah, before renewing his gun license), so they will look good in the eyes of the public and the same time nobody will complain since the foreigners with the gun ownership are minority.

I am talking about gun license here, not about something else, so I don't know why you mentioned people with tourist cards, it has nothing to do with them.

You mentioned people here 20 to 30 yeats without getting citizenship, I know people approaching that time who entered on tourist cards.

That said, I don't see any political capital being gained by forcing legal residents to go through more hoops to renew licenses. The DR populace won't care about that. Legal gun ownership is already strictly controlled and has been since I arrived more then 20 years ago. The government does have a plan to disarm as many as possible and legal residents could be a target for that reason and that is why it is harder for them.

The renewal is now 2 years for gun licenses. Having said that, and having owned guns before, I am no longer interested in having one.

Do you own a gun? I do. So you are just reposting something from the news without knowing is it really in effect now or not yet.

First of all, La iniciativa deberá agotar una aprobación más en el Senado para luego pasar a la Cámara de Diputados. And even then, the changes will not be in effect immediately because MIP is not ready for that and they will not make any changes to their system until the law is finally approved. And it still can take years with MIP, although I hope it will be faster. Don't forget, they have to change their system significantly for that, because as of now, everything is set for annual renewal. And it will not be easy and fast.
