Ain't that the truth?
I never understood why Dominicans make chairs that way.
Surely they don't find them comfortable either, and it wouldn't be difficult to just copy the form & style of a chair made elsewhere.

Well, so far, my favorite is Morua Mai. The service is very good, I've never been disappointed with the food (especially the salmon), and after talking with the owner about all the precautions and standards they take to make sure they are always up to code in terms of regulations including cleanliness, I have never had second thoughts. It's also has sentimental meaning for me and we usually have our celebratory dinners there. BUT, after reading this thread, while driving around last night, we located both El Batey and La Finca and have now added them to our list of others to try...... but NOT until I've had the ribs at Rockys!!! Can hardly wait.... can taste them now. :bunny:

Ok I have agreed with everybodys choices so far but El Torro.........sure if you like chewing on shoe leather.
I have given them the benefit of doubt on three occasions and have chewed on shoe leather everytime.
The only ones that had a good meal were the mosquitoes that feasted on me.
To be honest I have yet to have a good steak in this town.

You have to order the filet @ el torro. I had the pleasure of a catcher's mitt there once. Make sure you visit the gift shop with the old lady, between the bar and restaurant!

I agree with hifiman.

We bring our own US steaks here. Ohmaha Steaks. Nothing I have had here compares. I am told that if you marinate the local steaks for 48 hours, they are edible. I am going to try it, but not until I finish my Ohmaha filets.

I scheduled El Batey for tomorrow, but my family, who is visiting, requested Rocky's instead. Does that say something?

This is a quote from an earlier post in March :

With a group of friends on the north coast we have regularly gone to restaurants over the past year or so in the Cabarete and Sosua area so it was interesting to see the ranking given to some of the Sosua restaurants especially David Letterman?s list.
I think the distinction should be made between an upscale place/restaurant with the expectation of fine dining as opposed to a good place to eat. Other posters have mentioned this difference.
Rockys is a good place to eat with the ribs and garlic/lime chicken the best I have had anywhere. Baileys, El Choco , La Roca and Orchidee would come in this group ? a good place to eat.
In the other group I would put Morua Mai, Joseph?s at Sosua by the Sea in Sosua, and in Cabarete , Ocean Taste, Marabu and Embocca ( for small groups).

We all went to the restaurants listed below over the last year or so and the restaurants were ranked in order from the top :

Bliss - Cabarete
Ocean Taste ? Cabarete
Marabu ? Cabarete
Embocca - Cabarete
Morua Mai - Sosua
Bayerischer Hof - Cabarete
Pomodora - Cabarete
Bologne - Sosua
Joseph's Sosua by the Sea - Sosua

This represents the ranking at the time and as we all know chefs, owners and menus change so these views can only give an indication. Best, is of course subjective being a combination of food, quality, cost, ambiance, as well as the company you are with!
I have eaten at La Finca and El Toro and were disappointed at both. El Batey ? the seafood restaurant ? is a place I have yet to try but it comes with good recommendations from many quarters.
Waterfront I have found difficult and the cost not worth the view as one other poster said. La Puntilla was a superb place in the past but has faded recently. Both these restaurants have the potential to provide an upscale dining experience but not at the moment.
End of previous post ~~~~~~

Since this post we have eaten at El Batey and been dissapointed. The portions were small and not well cooked. Prices were high and did not reflect the quantitiy or quality of the food.
We have also eaten at El Toro again and with our friends and found it much better that our previous visit. It seems difficult to get good beef in the DR but much is produced here. We have finally found a butcher that can provide some good beef and eagerly await the first consignment.

Thanks for the update Olly. So if we add Cabarete to the mix are there any recommendations? I do not generally look to get beef in the DR. Prefer fish and sometimes goat.

For what it's worth there is a Japanese Sussi rest. in Ocean Dream Plaza, Cabarete, that is outstanding, But not cheap. There is also a small steak rest. next to Bliss, that is good. It's not upscale. The steaks aren't bad and the pork chops, that we've had re great. I think most things are about $300 peso's or less.

The small restaurant next to Bliss is good for a reasonably priced steak cooked on a barbecue style grill. Cristian (the chef) is French Canadian and a good cook.

If you want the best shrimp dish in the DR you can go to La Casita or Papi's in Cabarete as the locals call it. Order the camarones a la Papi or better yet ask if they have Longostinos a la Papi. It is expensive but well worth it. One order of shrimp can feed two. Make sure you get the side of pasta with it. Papi is simply the best chef in the area by far. He takes no reservations, does not even have a phone number. Also he is known to close for vacations with no return date. But when he comes back he is full anyway.

I am now in the DR. I was in Sosua for2 nights. Ate at La Finca and it was a nice restaurant and they do things well. The fish was a little salty for us. I am not a ribs person and so had never tried the ribs at Rockys. There are 2 restaurants in upstate New York famous for their ribs. Dinosaur Barbecue in Syracuse and Rochester and Brooks in Oneonta. My girl friend who is into ribs says Rocky's were the best ever. I thought they were great.
