So where can I get a real id living in DR? I haven't had a USA drivers license for about 20 years. I do have my USA passport.
Contrary to one poster who can't read you ONLY need your passport..............

You know it's a slow weekend in DR1-land when this thread is getting dragged out waaay longer than it should be :) The topic was discussed here at the beginning of 2025, and I don't think anything has changed since then.

Bingo.it all started (the ID card) with people that didn't have. a drivers lic. Certain states issued ID cards that were easy to obtain. Any illegal could get one BUT not the most sacred of IDs --- a passport. What has changed is the ID card got enhanced but the PP is still the gold standard of ID.

Mr. Big shot you do NOT need a Real ID if you have a passport. It is accepted as Real ID. You need to stick to walking the Blue Mall in your shorts and a t shirt..........

U.S. Passports and REAL ID

The REAL ID Act requires IDs issued by a state to meet federal security standards. On May 7, 2025, you must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. The U.S. passport book and passport card are both REAL ID compliant.

You could have studied harder in school. Perhaps you would have gotten into college.

So again I ask. Can I get a real ID living in DR? I really don't have anyplace in USA any longer. I use a friends address in my old home town when needed

Google “can I get a real ID living abroad” …..

And/or try contacting the DMV of your State for further info if needed. They’re the ones who issue them (speaking with a DMV employee by phone or online from abroad CAN be impossible, depending on the State)

Real I.D is not a passport.Real I.D is a cleared certified state I.D or driver's license.
A passport is a valid option for a Real ID. A passport is all I will be using to fly in the USA from this point forward and it won't be a problem.
I have no way to get another form of Real ID in the USA.

Question. If a Dominican is illegal in the USA, can they still use their Dominican passport to fly within the USA?

------------ Real ID:

Valid forms of REAL ID include REAL ID compliant driver's licenses and state IDs, U.S. passports, U.S. passport cards, and DHS trusted traveler cards. State-issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) and Enhanced Identification (EID) cards are also acceptable. Additionally, U.S. military IDs and Tribal IDs can serve as REAL ID.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. REAL ID Compliant Driver's Licenses and State IDs:
  • These IDs must have a star symbol in the upper right-hand corner to indicate compliance.

  • They are issued by state or outlying possession of the U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent.

2. U.S. Passport and Passport Card:
  • These are federally issued and accepted as proof of identity.

3. DHS Trusted Traveler Cards:
  • Examples include Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST cards.
  • These are also accepted as a valid alternative to a REAL ID.

4. State-Issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) and Enhanced Identification (EID):
  • These IDs are issued by states like Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont.
  • They are considered REAL ID-compliant and accepted for official purposes, including boarding domestic flights.

5. U.S. Military IDs:
  • Including those issued to dependents and retirees, are acceptable.

6. Federally Recognized Tribal IDs:
  • Some federally recognized tribes issue photo IDs that are also REAL ID compliant.

Important Note: A birth certificate is not a valid form of REAL ID, though it can be used to obtain other required documents.

If you don't live in the USA, getting a real ID from the DMV might not work for you even if you are a US citizen. It will depend upon the state and what you might need for proof to use for your "address" in that state. If you are an illegal alien in the USA , just go to the DMV in a sanctuary city to get a real ID :):p:devilish:)

If you have a valid passport, it is all you need. No worries with a valid passport.

I am well aware of this. Real I.D is mostly for domestic travel. I travel more than most for work. Other than a military passport, a passport and global entry is the closest thing to a magic bullet.

Did you not state above that a passport was not a valid form of Real ID?

Simply, if you live in the US, travel a lot to the US (US citizens, etc.) then a Real ID would be needed to enter government facilities, domestic travel, etc, if you do not have a passport or do not carry it with you. For example, going to a government facility, you may not want to carry your passport/passport card so you would need the Real ID. I am just surprised at the number of people that do not seem to have a passport based on the chaos the news is reporting.

Half or less of US citizens have a passport..........

How Many Americans Have a Passport? (2025 Update) | Rustic ...

As of the most recent passport data for the 2024 fiscal year, there are 169,915,821 valid U.S. passports. This number includes both passport books and cards, meaning one individual could hold two passports. Excluding passport cards, between 45% and 50% of all Americans have a passport.

To clarify a bit, the Real ID Act came about in the US after 9/11 and has taken this long to be finally implemented.

Passports and the new drivers license requirements ( I.e., called Real ID) can be used for domestic travel, and while completely separate documents, are REAL ID Act compliant.

Valid Passports as a Real ID document can be used for domestic and international air travel and admission to certain federal facilities. But, while Real ID compliant drivers licenses are allowed/required for domestic travel and certain federal facility entrance, you cannot travel internationally with a Real ID compliant drivers license or equivalent.

For those who do not drive, the states offer an equivalent Real ID, but without driving privileges.

The bottom line for DR resident US expats is that your current valid passport will be all that is needed for ID purposes.

A lot of fuzz for something that is similar to a cedula. We have a similar ID card for decades in Europe, I never had one because my drivers license and passport cover everything already. It is for those who don’t have these for identification.

In my home country of the USofA, the liberal nut jobs say that forcing everyone to have a national ID card for transactions in business/travel/voting is not right.
It would be prejudiced and somehow violate voting rights, privacy issues etc. All manner of utter nonsense is used against a national ID card by leftists.

And now there is a requirement for RealID: But NO it cannot be a USA version of a Cedula for all. It has to be something more "fair".

At least a passport is a valid form of RealID. It's the only thing I got for travel to and within the USofA.
My wife's DR passport will have to do as well when we visit the USA.

Since it was stated they don't live in the USA any longer, it would be a real stretch if any DMV would provide a RealID compliant document.
They would probably only do that if you were an illegal alien in NY, MA, CA and a few other states.

Thank the gods we can use our passports.

There's nothing "realer" than a passport. For many years (I lived in NYC) I didn't have a driver's license, but I did have a passport, and it is all you need. A passport confirms your citizenship. A license or work ID just means you passed a test. Maybe.
