Windy. At least this was caught before a mass casualty event occurred. It will be interesting to see if the lawyers defending the JetSet owner use this as part of their defence. It further emphasizes the need for the current administration to quickly put standards and inspection procedures in place for private and institutional commercial and residential construction. If the President is capable of doing that, it may be the best part of his legacy.

I don't think they "caught" the fallen roof, but at least they stopped the project before it hurt anyone. ;)

JetSet removed a key structural support and overloaded the roof. Seems like things that should not be allowed. But hey, this is the DR and if you think code enforcement is really going to happen universally, then you might be disappointed. Tantamount to wishing for world peace or moto drivers to be licensed and wear approved helmets.

What code? What enforcement? They show up looking for money for a building permit. They do not look at the plans, they just collect the money. You ask for a receipt and they tell you that you do not get one. They never came back to inspect the final product. Why are we pretending that there is a system in place?

This was a bad job of installing support for an roof that was poured. Fault of the Maestro

This project already had a stop work order and it was ignored. The owner is probably a Dom Yorker living outside this country who doesn't understand the changes taking place across the city. The laws are starting to be enforced here in Santiago.

Ah, who pays attention to stop work orders? Normally nothing a few pesos won't fix....

Basically you were a sucker. Si o no?
You tell me. The building got built. I paid far less than what I should have. Fortunately my brother in law was in charge of construction, so it got built the right way. I will be ok.
So who is the sucker?
Society? Because buildings are not being built to code?
The government? Because the fee I paid went right into the inspector's pocket?
The subsequent buyer? Because they do not know if it was built to code?
The person at the bottom of the ruble when there is an earthquake? (for those buildings where they used less rebar and concrete than necessary?)
The homeowner who does not have a brother in law to supervise construction?
The person who pays for 4000 psi concrete but instead gets watery 2500 psi concrete that was remixed after it already started to get hard?
The list of suckers are many. I was not one of them.

Interesting reply. I need some time to think on this. BTW I have had several stop work orders put on me over the years in my home country that have had very tight regulations. I also renovated here with an engineer and took down and re supported a principal wall in the kitchen.
I'll be back with some comments.
