the web site is old, we have been there a few times over the last 4 or 5 yrs. not sure if he still runs it as a gentlemans club, but in '07 he was still running the small bar at the front. I do know he rents rooms or used to anyway. we have stayed there when it was too late to drive back to resort or to drunk too. and cheap. I remember when Steve's parott bar was at the back many yrs ago
I doubt you have been there in the past 3 years, it currently resembles downtown Beirut inside the complex, no windows or doors, or water in the pool.

hey tambo, thats what it was like last summer, and btw, the pool hasn't been functional in at least 5 yrs. And yes we have been there in the last 3 years, i drop in every year when i am there. I know John and drop in to say hi, dont care what the place looks like,
I rented a small apartment there Feb 2005, cheap or reasonable and I would stay there again and have sent my cousin and friends there. It is about 8 to 10 blocks from the beach , also, across the street from a Dom that sells good barbeque chicken. He does not specialize in women, but you're in Sosua, down the street from a nice grocery store, which is really across the street and a few doors up. He sold the corner bar to Mike ( Sleasy ) an ex-NY taxi driver, a few years back. But he owns the rest of that corner property. The pool may or may not be in working condition, but he does have hot water, which is sometimes not an option, if outside the tourist area, looking for a bargain. I consider ,Big John a friend, since he hasn't done anything wrong to me. I did have a run in with another hotel owner named John, who, along with his police friends pulled me out of a restarant and escorted me to the bank because I owed him $185.00 and demanded his money on the spot or go to Jail. I was waiting on Western Union, while staying elsewhere, and got the OK
from him the previous night by phone that it was OK to pay him the following evening. Well, MAC card not working, I checked my pockets and to my surprise, I had almost $200.00 on me and payed him. He then told me in front of his police friends, I was keeping bad company and looking for drugs, so I better watch out, mind you I'm an ex-Philly Cop. Luckily for him and me, we were in DR., because I still have a clear conscience, but still pi$$ed. That John lost money from me , family and friends, which is much more than that $185.00, so the last part of that vacation I stayed at the Blue Dolphin, with Big John charging me $250.00 a month and also no problems........Thank God for Western Union..........................

Whether the girls on the website are current or not... most of them look like the type of girls you try to KEEP OUT of your hotel...not invite in or worse yet, employ to "entertain" your guests!

I don't know how much experience you have in visiting Sosua, but why worry about what 10 to 20 girls look like where you are staying when you can go to the Disco, 6 blocks down the street the night you get there and pick out 1 to 3 or whatever you think you can handle from hundreds. Big John is in his late 50's to 60's and dealing with a nationality other than his own. I know as a young Black mAN i WOULD SAY TO MYSELF, when seeing someone crossing the race line, man what does he see in her. And I'm sure others said the same about me when I dated my little blue eyed girlfriend.
So like I've said, you're in Sosua ( Ho Town ), walk or drive 2 blocks towards town and unless it's 5am or 6am, you will see what you're looking for, I have never been dissapointed, even when leaving the apt. at 2 or 3am for the last 5yrs. I sure can't say that for any place in the states, can you ????
I wake up whatever time and hit the streets, and leave my female-friend wherever I'm at and if I run into someone else, I have already made arrangements at 2 places where I pay the guard or management in the morning. When I get home, she's there, no questions asked. If I'm gone for a couple of days she might look at me funny, but that's it, if there's a problem I put my clothes on again and leave if she'll let me, but no argument or fight.
So when you go there to Sosua or anywhere in the DR , it's what you make it, but all over the country, nothing but pretty , pretty, young women. After my first and second trip, I couldn't remember seeing any older women, because there were so many pretty young women, it's just unbelievable........ So again pick your own, I have reaquired my taste buds of 35yrs ago and using them to the best of my ability.......So again the Blue Dolphin is guest friendly, guest friendly, guest friendly,.................. need I say more. And probably a bargain compared to most other places in Sosua.

Some folks have ethical reasons for not taking their business there and it has nothing to do with hos, ugly beat up hos or no hos at all, nor dry swimming pools.

Well that sounds real good and Utopian, but what if doing so gets you into trouble?
Would you give that same advice to a guy asking about buying crack cocaine? Not bloody likely.
Would you give that same advice to a guy who is going to put himself into serious danger? I don't think so.
Would you so counsel a dude asking about having sex with children, "you don't visit the DR to satisfy anyone but YOURSELF", I would have to suppose that you would not.
It is my opinion that a generalized suggestion such as the one above is not a very good idea.

My information as a tourist who visits a few times a year is that John is a person that you dont really want to deal with.
There is so much gossip on that island you never really know the truth - however - there are many who have told me to stay away from him.
So there you go!
( im also told he used to be a wrestler and is known for wrestling people to the floor - dont know the truth - just gossip - there are so many people and hotels on the North Coast its no hardship to stay away from him and his hotel - the hotel I had never heard of before this thread! )
