I want to get to the bottom of this, right here, right now!!

Who started Dominicans on JW(Black)? Why not Red? Green? Gold? well we all know the answer for JW(Blue):knockedou. If I had a nickel for every dominican drinking JW(Black) I would be rich, well dominican rich at least, hahahaha.

Do dominicans like JW(Black) or do they drink it because everybody else drinks it?? I am going to ask around.

Its really good! I stay away from it because its so easy to drink too much, the stuf just goes down real smooth.

Red and green both give huge hangovers and Blue is too expensive too drink outside of special occasions.

Ricardo I love this thread, next week I'll ask all my male relatives this questions, because they all love the darn thing.

Like Mike said it goes down smooth, that has to be one of the reasons.
and prbably because it feeds their egoes, showing off in front of their native relatives, I have seen them buy half a gallon of that stuff, wow, they do look really chopo, sitting on a rock in the river with their wife beater T and sipping from half a gallon of Johnny walker, lol.:p

Ask 10 Dominicans why they drink the black and 11 of them will tell you that rum upsets their stomach.

I love a good scotch and will give my eye teeth for an old Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie or similar ... stuff that you do not mess up with water or ice or heavens, coke! The thought of it is too much. A little water on the side is about the most you do. So, from time to time one gets gifts from others and sometimes you get Johnny Walker Black, just cause they know you like scotch. Tonight I had some. OK, single malt it is not, but it was quite pleasant and I can figure why it becomes really popular. Besides the 'sex appeal' and the 'fashion statement' it is really nice stuff. Kinda like a bottle of good dry white Chilean table wine. Imminently drinkable but not the stuff that you have for real occasions.

J.W. Gold -- smooth. You can sip till you drop and best part --- no hangover the next day. Excellent neat or with single ice cube.

My Favorites: Lagavulin and Oban.

my wife's family [all in the campo] once had a nice gathering xmas time. i brought over a big bottle [from the duty free shop] 5 liters of Johnny Walker Black. They looked at it, cracked it open, poured a bit in a glass. one uncle sipped it and i quote:
esto es romo malo
and they all laughed and proceeded to drink the whole bottle in a 6 hour timespan...LOL serious drinkers there....i personally cant drink scotch/whisky like that so i mixed it with sprite....ugh

I thought we were talking about why JW Black as opposed to the other JW "flavors"?

I'm betting it's a status thing, like spending all their funds on appearance instead of substance. I know people that have huge issues paying their rent yet have the latest cell phone. One person I know has 2 really nice cell phones, different carriers, and is looking at buying an iPhone, yet has not replaced a filling that fell out as the dentist is too expensive...at $3000 pesos for the work required. Go figure :D

Talking whisky here.

Now that we're back on topic, my guess is that Black is so much better/smoother than Red, that anyone who has tasted it, doesn't want to go back to Red, and the other JWs are just too darn expensive, so Black it is.

I think it's all about marketing. Both from the Dom Yorks returning and showing off their new found wealth and "culture" and the distributor. Over the past few weeks I've noticed alot of Dewars ads (Soy Dewarista!)...let's see if they take a chunk out of the new "scotch market". This is a culture built on rum and beer and just about anything perceived more upscale is accepted quickly and with reckless abandon...JWB is just affordable enough for the masses who want to appear above the rest, without being too expensive...like Grey Goose. I remember a few years ago, Absolut, then Grey Goose was the "it" drink...

I'm not really a Scotch drinker, though I like it on occasion, but seriously, it is not meant to be drunk on the beach in the blazing sun, or as has been mentioned, with coke or sprite! But I see more bottles of JW on the beach than Brugal and even the kids are drinking it...

Hey that the DomYorks drink it doesn't mean is a bad drink, for me is one of the best, I can get downright wasted with it and go to work without a problem the next morning, for me that's its best quality, besides the taste is not so strong like others drinks which tastes like rubbing alcohol or agua ardiente.

Of course when I see people drinking JW Black with 7-up or Coca Cola I just have to laugh, they think they are drinking Brugal, limiting the whisky's virtues by adding a sweet drink to the mix.

It may be considered chopo because DomYorks without knowing why just picks it up in industrial quantities and like to make a fuss about it so people see and talk about them drinking Black.

Why not Red? it is downright garbage, people prefer Dewars if they are in a budget, and the Green, Gold and Blue are just way too expensive to go to a Bar and order a couple of bottles without going bankrupt.

The alternative to JW Black is Chivas Regal 12 Anos, priced almost identical and almost the same drink quality people picks it to "variar las cosas".

Dewars

Dewars 12 may not be the 'thang' for the bling-blingers but sure tastes better to me for the price. I suspect Dominicans drink tiqueta negra for the same reasons they wear those enormous sunglasses that cover half their face - because their friends do.

guys, there are a lot of interesting answers/opinions here about the whole JWB thing....i dont know what to suspect, i agree it is odd to see scotch/whisky being consumed in a rum producing country. i still believe that Brugal is the island's number one liquor...but i do see the JW [red or black] rearing its head/bottle...LOL
lately though i have seen more and more Chivas Regal....yes the Dewars is good budget wise.....i still cant drink this stuff without some ice and or a splash of sprite! LOL

I too have seen a lot of Chivas Regal bottles at parties in SDQ. On a recent Sunday walk down the waterfront at Boca Chica, I saw several tables with CR and none with JWB.

I had taken four one-liter bottles of JWB with me to SDQ on my last trip because many of my DR friends seem to prefer JWB. It's probably a status thing. However, when the JWB ran out I bought a few bottles of CR and it was enjoyed by all as well. I personally like the taste of CR.

By the way, not to hijack this thread, if you have never been to Boca Chica on a Sunday afternoon, you may be missing out on a very interesting and entertaining DR experience. Pack a bottle or two of JWB or CR along with your swimsuit and sunscreen and head on down with your DR friends. It is a fun experience as it seems like half of SDQ is there on Sundays. Ice cold Jumbo Presidentes are pretty refreshing at BC as well.

Meanwhile, back to the JWB discussion...........

isn't JW Black the least expensive, if it is, that's probably the reason and like many said, it goes down smooth. You know guys I am going to have to try it myself.
