We are planning a holiday in SW, Barahona area but can't work out which airport to fly to from UK. Whether PUJ or POP we will stay there couple of nights then travel to Barahona by public transport. Looking for small friendly hotel on a beach but don't need large resort will casinos, golf courses etc. Suggestions please? Looks like PUJ might be more convenient for our onward jouney but can only find huge resort hotels there. Also what will weather be like in March? I keep reading different reports for that time of year both north and south - and central too?

Many European flights offering POP as a destination often stop in PUJ.
So, you may want to check that before you settle on POP because with all the wait and all, it adds a good 2 hours to your flight.
Besides that, I think the trip from PO or PUJ to Barahona is about a similar distance and time... PUJ maybe being a tad shorter.
You now DON'T have to drive INTO Santo Domingo to reach the highway to San Cristobal and the South West when coming from POP... maybe that may be an advantage when coming by car... but the bus will take you into town.
All in all, while we'd love to have y'all in Puerto Plata, I'd be inclined towards trying the PUJ route.
(Btw, in case you didn't know, there is an airfield in Barahona... sometimes it's closed, sometimes it's open. There are no regular flights I would know about but private flights can be arranged for).

Regarding the weather, march is the best month of the year in the Sosua / Puerto Plata area.

Barahona? Closest major airport is Santo Domingo, I think. Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong.

If you fly to Pto Plata, take a long look at Cabarete 20 minutes from Pto Plata airport. It seems to fit your requirements. Pretty quiet, laid back. Small hotels or individual condo units.

Suggestions in Cabarete:

Hotels:
Cabarete Hotel Dominican Republic, VILLA TAINA HOTEL
and
Viva Wyndham (all-inclusive)

Condos:
Hotel Cabarete Palm Beach Condos and Studios
and
Ocean Dream (search 'cabarete' at ..VRBO? is Vacation Rentals by Owner? Vacation Homes Rentals by Owner)
and
Velero Beach Resort; Dominican Republic Luxury Vacation Resort Hotel & Luxury Condo Rentals

All on Cabarete bay. All an easy walk to lots of bars/restaurants.
None except Viva would be described as 'large' and it's only 'medium' big ;)

Thanks to all advisors. Our plan is to fly to POP stay 3 nights at Natura Caba?as (between cabarete and Sosua), bus to Barahona stay 8 nights at Coral Sol or Casa Benita - any one know either? Then bus to Jarabacoa, stay at Rancho Baiguate 3 nights, then bus to POP for evening flight home. All comments on our preposed itinerary gratefully received particularly from anyone who has stayed at any of the mentioned hotels.

Can you tell me more about Coralsol? We really like the sound of it but is it really primitive?! Don't mind no TV or air con but are there efficient mosquitos nets - if all windows open at night? Also what's the beach like? Lieable on? Swimable from? Food? And the qestion that really gives away our ages - are all other guests young things? We are in our later years and would like some like minded souls to talk to in the eveings! All info greatfully received.

Grizelda,
Your choice of Natura Cabanas should be a good one.
It places you about midway between Sosua and Cabarete - either easily accesible from there in about 10 minutes.
